Jim: News from the News, early September, 1914 Columbia, a century ago this week: gardens & watergates; mills, milliners, & musicians; pimples & purgatives; and sundry other news items too numerous to mention By: Jim Early September, 1914, found Columbia & Columbians as busy as ever, a downpour on Monday the seventh notwithstanding. On that afternoon, a forty-minute deluge flooded the bottomlands around town, and "Jamestown Street, from the first bridge to foot of the hill beyond the Eubank property, looked like a river." A consensus of the town's oldest residents was that for a time, more water flowed in the town branch than they'd ever seen. Fortunately, the only damage done was to gardens and watergates, and the grocery firm of Kelsey & Hudson "sustained a small loss." Reworking the Auditorium of the Courthouse Meanwhile, up on the public square, the Messrs. Willis and Murrell were, by order of the Fiscal Court, completely reworking the auditorium of the courthouse. Changes included moving the judge's stand to the side of the room fronting Jamestown Street; elevating the floor on the Burkesville Street side to match the floor level on the Campbellsville Pike side; and redoing the benches and railings to front the judge's stand. Said the News, When this arrangement had been completed, a great deal of noise will be cut off from the court room, and the conducting of cases can proceed while hauling by heavy wagons is going on upon the square." Tom Chaney: Fenton Johnson, A Fine Voice from New Haven Of Writers And Their Books: Fenton Johnson: A Fine Voice from New Haven. Tom says Fenton Johnson's voice is as vivid as a streak of fierce lightning over our Kentucky knobs. This column first appeared 16 October 2005. The next earlier Tom Chaney column: How Many Biscuits Can You Eat? By Tom Chaney One of the great pleasures of the last dozen or so years has been the illuminating, new voice of Fenton Johnson, come out of New Haven in Nelson County. I have just re-read Scissors, Paper, Rock, a vivid amalgam of eleven closely interrelated stories of family, community, memory, love, and death. Upon rereading it I discovered anew the truth of the reviewer who said, "Read the eleven brief pieces of this brilliant novel and you'll never again hear its title phrase without feeling chills. . . . Her Alzheimer's creates the greatest moment of separation in their fifty year marriage. Next earlier Chuck Hinman column -Red Buhrmann, My College Roommate By Chuck Hinman Have I Ever Been Jealous Over My Wife? It would seem when you hear my surprising answer -- "Yes, and with a mind-boggling consuming jealousy you can't comprehend!" -- you would probably relate it to a likely incident in the early years of our marriage. WRONG! You would never dream that it happened when we were nearly 80 years old, and had completed near 50 years of 'one flesh' marriage consummated by our wedding vows so long ago. Carol Perkins: The Final Tour (of old Metcalfe Co. HS) 'The tour is over and now when we pass the school we will see dozers and hear the sound of falling blocks and crumbling bricks. Down will come the walls, the halls, and the special places where students hid instead of going to class. Gone will be the dressing rooms, stairs we sat on during recess, and the sound of lockers slamming. It is, indeed, bittersweet. - CAROL PERKINS The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Old Metcalfe County High Memories By Carol Perkins Bittersweet. The Final Tour-The Walk Through of the original Metcalfe County High School is over and demolition begun. Over three hundred of us took that final tour with our classmates last Sunday afternoon and stood inside empty classrooms filled with images of what once was. I could see the faces of my teachers and hear the sounds of classmates answering questions, whispering or giggling at things that were probably not funny. Different School for Different Generations As different generations strolled together, I found it so interesting to listen to their memories. Some never knew that the "addition" was not always there. The library in their time was not where it was in mine. They listened as their mothers told their stories and how they differed from their own. By 1994 when the original high school moved to the hill, there were many more classrooms than in 1958. Of course, there were also more students. For instance, there were 49 in my 1964 class. The class of '94 probably had at least a hundred or more.
