Joyce Coomer: Sympathy for owner of a cat named Katie

About feeding the neighbors' cats . . . I am guilty of this. I put out plenty of food for my cats, and since they don't always eat it all at one time, any neighbors' cats who are rambling around stop in for a meal -- ditto for the neighbors' dogs or pigs or horses or donkeys or goats or cows . . . animals seem to think that I'm the sole source of tasty food in the area. This goes for the wildlife also -- this summer the raccoons have taken to absconding with the dishes! - JOYCE COOMER
Comments about: A cat named Katie

By Joyce Coomer

I know how this bereaved cat owner feels. She has my utmost sympathy. The loss of a beloved cat is harder on the cat's person than non-cat people could ever imagine.

A cat named Katie

Katie was a stray. Through two sets of babies she was distant, aloof - approachable but skeptical about humans. That changed after the vet changed her. She and her owner had a long, loving relationship - until a neighbor enticed 'Katie' away with food. She continued feeding Katie despite the writer's insistence that the neighbor cease doing so. The tragic end of Katie's life seems to have been caused, at least in part, by the neighbor's refusal to honor the request. It's something to think about. Maybe a reader knows the answer, has the wisdom of a Solomon or Silas Sullivan to guide well meaning cat feeders in the right direction.
It's a story which gives us, as suckers for panhandling cats, pause. Maybe we, too, ought to check things out before falling for a sob story; after all, we know better, know cats lie - worse than sheep. But that's no excuse should be cause this pet owner continues to endure. - EW

I have always enjoyed the stories on CM about people's pets and their interaction with animals.

I would like to share a story about a cat named "Katie."

Several years ago I found a young yellow kitten in my back yard. It was dirty, skinny, and scruffy looking.

Wonders if Canadians arrived via Wild Blue Yonder Airways

Thinks they would spend more money, stay longer if they came by tour bus

An Inquiring Mind writes:
I suppose these Canadians arrived at Streeval Field via Wild Blue Yonder Airways instead of on the Square via tour busses? It's a well-known fact - "You could look it up," as James Thurber was wont to say - that tour bus visitors stay longer, spend more money, and are more likely to return. Just saying! --An Inquiring Mind
