Mike Watson: A memorial day story - Captain John T. McLain This is an old story taken from the Adair County News,, in the "Burksvill" newsletter, about Capt. John T. McLain, who is buried at the summit of the Big Hill overlooking the City of Burkesville, KY. It is an account of Decoration Day, today observed as Memorial Day. Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) The writer of this article, Mike Watson will be among the vendors at the 10am-3pmCT/11am-4pmET, Saturday, June 1, 2013, 2nd Annual Book Fair at the Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY. By Mike Watson Adair County Historian "Decoration Day has been generally unobserved here and entirely so except the decoration of one grave. Judge J.J. Simpson, County Clerk M.M. Collins, Dr. J.H. Myers and Leslie Cary enwreathed and strew flowers upon the grave of Capt. John T. McLain. Capt. McLean will always be remembered with an intermixture of admiration and curiosity by those who knew him and will be looked upon with some degree of mystery and superstition by those whose information comes second handed. WWII Veteran Rev. Raymond Martin speaker Memorial Day Big change this year: Service time has been changed to 4pmCT, 1600 hours, and will continue tradition started last year with program inside, with only wreath laying outside. By Joe Hare, Commander, VFW Columbia Post 6097 VFW Columbia Post 6097 invites you to our annual Memorial Day program to help us honor our Fallen Hero's from all wars. The program will be held at the VFW Building, 411 Fairground St, Columbia, KY, Sunday, 26 May 2013. We have made a change from years past that you need to be sure and take note of, and that is the start time. The time of the program this year has been changed to 4pmCT or 1600 Hrs for you military minds. Also, as last year, all of the program, except for the "laying of the wreaths and honor guard duties," will be held inside the hall where there is ample seating. We are honored to have Brother Raymond Martin as our speaker this year. Brother Martin is a WW II, Navy Veteran and well know in our community for his long ministry at the Columbia Christian Church. Again, come help us honor these Heroes, whose sacrifice has done so much to preserve the freedoms we have here in our great Nation.
