WRH, Columbia, KY, ends discussion with LifePoint Hospitals

News release from Westlake Regional Hospital
Submitted by Cheryl Wall at 6:40pmCT, (2012-08-08)

August 8, 2012 - The Westlake Hospital Board announced today that they have terminated discussions with LifePoint Hospitals in an attempt to reach a definitive asset purchase agreement. Three months earlier on May 8, 2012, LifePoint Hospitals had been selected by the Board as the finalist in the Board's search for a strategic partner.

Commenting on the Board's decision to terminate discussions with LifePoint Hospital's, Board Chairman James Evans stated that the Board simply could not accept the reduced offer price and the Board felt that it was in the best interests of the hospital and the Adair County residents to continue to identify another strategic partner. Discussions with other potential strategic partners will begin immediately.

Superintendent's Journal: 1st Day of School, August 8, 2012

New superintendent shares diary of a day which began at 6amCT and included visits to all the schools. A pleasant surprise for incoming superintendent: Overwhelming enthusiasm for improvement, and suggestions - including need for a Junior ROTC program - and a need for the Superintendent to be more recognizable after overhearing two students wondering who he might be and one said, "I think he's the mayor." There's more, including acknowledgement of who the best read person is in Adair County!

News from the Adair Co., KY, School District

I arrived in my office at 6amCT Transportation Director David Jones had told me Tuesday evening that I wouldn't hear from him until after 7amCT, unless there was a problem. At 7:10am he called me to report that every bus was on time with only one bus suffering a brake issue. We quickly switched buses and all was well.

LifePoint is out; Fiscal Court may have to save Hospital

"Plan B" now falls on Adair Fiscal Court and CJE; whether they meet the challenge or not may mean the difference in whether there is a hospital in Adair County or not

By Ed Waggener

Adair County Judge Ann Melton said today that LifePoint has lowered its offer to a totally unacceptable figure, and the Nashville for-profit is now out of the picture as a buyer for Westlake Regional Hospital.

"We knew yesterday," she said, "but we had to allow time for all hospital employees to be informed before making the news public."

The Judge said she and others from all parts of the community have been working on a backup plan. "Saving the hospital is now not a partisan matter. It is a community matter. It can be saved," she said, "but only with help of everybody in the county - and especially on the Adair Fiscal Court, including all seven magistrates and of course, on me, as County Judge Executive."

Many in the community believe that the responsibility for failure to achieve a sale and the hospital's desperate financial circumstances falls most heavily on the current hospital board and the management firm responsible for the hospitals fortune - or misfortune - the past 18 months.

Mary's House just needs $558 to reach start goal

Figures at 12:16pmCT, Wed., Aug. 8, 2012, total. Just $548 needed to start construction on Mary's House

By Fran Neat

We're now so close! The total raised is now $39,442

We now need just $548. !!!

Thank you to Matt Baker of Flatwoods Diner for his suggestion of the $20 donation to his coffee cup for Mary's House. I just returned from picking up his second cup full of $150 for a total of $256. Thank you to all contributors at Flatwoods Diner!

We can see the light at the end of the tunnel and are still so amazed at the outpouring of love and support from Adair Countians and our surrounding neighbors. It is as if you have "adopted" this precious family into your hearts and into your very own family.

For those of you who haven't had an opportunity to make your donation, you can be certain that it will be put to good use even if we go over the goal. Mary's House Committee would like to purchase new furniture for the house; and that, of course, will take extra money. May God continue to bless you as you bless others! - Fran Neat

Here's the story of Mary's House and how your can help, now:

People of Adair Co. deserve truth: Westlake Regional Hospital

Not a blame game; it is not a game at all. Says it is a matter for the future. And, he adds, we must have a hospital in our county at any cost

By Richard Stephens

A friend once said "I don't know much, but what I do know, I know as well as anybody." I believe that to be applicable here. I DO NOT KNOW who or what caused the woes of the Westlake Regional Hospital , however I DO KNOW the people of Adair County deserve the truth.

I DO NOT KNOW if laws have been violated but I DO KNOW a thorough, open investigation is necessary. I DO KNOW if a person or persons have violated laws, there needs to be a vigorous prosecution with an all out effort to recover any or all assets. This is not the "blame game" it is not a game at all. It is necessary to understand we have no way to predict the future except the past. Having said that, I DO KNOW we must have a hospital in our county at any cost. I can't imagine the difficulty of holding one's breath from Columbia to Louisville or Lexington.

I DO KNOW I have been a patient in three different Louisville hospitals ICU's and have found Westlake's ICU to be unsurpassed in care, professionalism and caring. Our unit not only cares for patients but is very caring for the family. I DO NOT KNOW all the doctors at WLRH. I do know my doctor and staff are as good as it gets. He is not only a great physician, but a good Christian man. I DO KNOW before we throw this baby out with the bath water, we best understand it is our baby. --Richard Stephens

Opening day at Adair Schools: All the kids arrive safely

Superintendent Alan Reed called at 7:44amCT to say that opening day at at the Adair County Schools went really well. "David Jones called just now and said that all the busses arrived safely and all the kids are at their schools." David Jones is Adair County School District Director of Pupil Transportation - (whose word is authority on mornings when snow or other inclement weather means school must be called off).

Supt. Reed said that because of quick response, when one bus had a minor brake issue, Mr. Jones' department was able to resolve the situation quickly and that route was on time, too.

Mr. Jones reminds motorists to remember, this afternoon, from 2:35pmCT to 4:30pmCT, that the District's big yellow busses will be rolling - and making frequent stops, throughout Adair County.

Fog a factor in commute between Columbia-Campbellsville

Patchy fog is a factor this morning. Larry Smith reports that the fog was thickening on KY 55 between Campbellsville and Columbia, particularly around the lake. "Motorists who are travelling just before dawn may see some really dense fog before the sun burns it off," he said.

He's now counting the Fogs of August, remembering that old timers in Summersville, KY, always said that counting the number the foggy mornings in August is the best predictor of snows in the coming winter. "As of today, (August 8, 2012), there have been three August mornings with fog.
