Surplus Vegetables for Area Food Banks

By Wendy Butler Burt

Area gardeners who find themselves in the lucky position of having too many tomatoes (or cukes, beans, summer squash, etc.) might think of offering their bounty to an area food bank. My morning delivery of surplus vegetables to a food bank in Columbia was welcomed most enthusiastically. --Wendy Butler Burt

Remembering Paul Joines: He had a very cheerful outlook on life

By Jon Halsey

I will truly miss Paul. He had a very cheerful outlook on life and we always looked forward to seeing each other and solving the world's problems. Usually this involved such weighty topics as the best lures, favorite campsites, etc.

I often envied Paul's simple and direct outlook. He was often quite amused watching me tie myself up in knots pondering some metaphysical philosophy which Paul understood long before I did that it didn't amount to a tinkers dam.

A long life is indeed a blessing but it has its downsides and losing good friends is definitely one of them. - Jon Halsey, Knifley, KY

Highly trained eyes add fascinating deductions to: Checkpoint

Knowing cars helps solve mystery, gives insight into personalities, insights which an ordinary person - who does not have the benefit of a Ph.D. from The University (at Fayetteville, not Little Rock) - might scarcely notice. Read this, and for a moment it sounds like a monologue from Psyche or Numbers. But it's all in a day's work for this mathematician, a dedicated professor of mathematics at Lindsey Wilson College

Rickie Williams writes:
Howdy, Mr Ed. The date of the photo will have to be put later than 1958...by at least four years. What caught my attention first was the 1962 Chevy Impala Convertible on the back row of cars and beside it is a 1959 Ford. I had to find images to support my conclusion, but what really makes me say it was AT LEAST four years after 1958 is the 1962 Buick Special Station Wagon sitting at the check point. The new has certainly already been worn off the car; it has already been fitted with mud-n-snow rear tires; and if Barney had owned that car, Goober would have told him that it needed a good washing! A Mary's House Story: People really want to give

People are going out of their way to give to Mary's House.

Matt Baker, who put up a donations can at the Flatwoods Diner, said, "People here are really helping out. Mostly, it's regular customers, but yesterday something happened which really meant something.

"A woman I had never seen before came in, asked where the Mary's House donation jar was, and headed straight for it. She folded a twenty, put it in the jar, and left. I saw her car pull over to the new road and head out. That's pretty impressive, I thought."

Baker said he's hoping there will be enough money donated today so that the second gift from the store equals one Saturday, when $106 was turned in. "Maybe today a few more people will step up and we can make today the day they announce that the money has been raised."

For anyone who wants to donate at the Flatwoods Diner: It's at 6470 Burkesville Road, Columbia, KY 42728, PHONE: 270-378-6979; HOURS: every day from 6am-7pmCT.

(Ad) Check CM Classifieds For Sale for Great Buys

For Sale in ColumbiaMagazine.com classifieds continues to be one of the very busiest markets in South Central Kentucky. There always plenty of bargains, even with very fast sale. Here's one which should perk up interest in a lot of folks, just posted a little after 4amCT, Tuesday, August 7, 2012:
$600 Treadmill from Sears, still in good condition for $50 The treadmill is a Pro-Form 750-CS that I purchased at Sears in Campbellsville not too long before the store went out of business. I've not used the treadmill in a couple of years...but it is in really good condition. (It cost over $600.00, but...) all I'm asking for it is $50.00 (in cash). However, whoever purchases the treadmill will need to transport it (during the day), including moving it out of my house--a 2-person job, I think, given its size and weight. Anyone interested can contact me at 828-707-3755.
If you are needing a Treadmill, check it out. But before you call, check CM Classifieds FOR SALE to see if it is still listed. (We'll retire it as soon as we hear from the owner that it is sold, but this story remains in archives.) Scan the continuously updated CM Classifieds each time you visit the site.
