We can save our hospital

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal commentary

The way I see it at this point in time, we the people have only two options:
  1. Plan one - the first and current option is to sell the hospital and end up having to pay off a debt on a hospital we the people do not own and over which we will have no control.

  2. Plan two - would be for we the people to assume control of our hospital, develop a plan for open management, and develop a plan to pay off the debt.
I know both statements are overly simplified but this is the way I see the situation as it stands. I'm a private sector guy but if we the people are going to be stuck with the bill then I think we the people need to protect our own interest.

If there are other options we need to hear about them.

I know we can save our hospital now that we have removed our heads from the sand. We just have to stop the fear-mongering, the name calling, the blame game, and go to work. - Billy Joe Fudge

His family called them: Low caterpillars

John Howery writes:
We - the kids along my road - grew up calling these critters "low" caterpillars -- I suppose because they seemed to hang their cocoons and turn into moths low in the many apple and pear trees that were around. I think they're actually named "Lo" (not "Io") catepillars. I remember they liked my mother's flowers as well, and as soon as they were spotted, out would come the pump tubes of rose and vegetable powder for the garden and sprays for the trees. I recall the sting to be about like that of a bee or wasp except they could get ya two or three times. Pretty, but aggravating - for sure. --John Howery

Barbara Armitage: Thanks for help -The caterpillar that stung me

To set record straight, it was a larva of an Io Moth (Photo, left)

By Barbara Armitage

I really appreciate all the kind folks who have called to check on me after my "caterpillar incident." Believe me, I was a bit more watchful in the garden this morning.

I know that it's important to you as the editor of CM and to your loyal readers to make sure that you do your best to get your facts straight.

The caterpillar that stung me was identified at the University of Kentucky as a larva of an Io Moth. You can see a photo at UK Entomology website

The pack Saddle Caterpillar also packs quite a sting. Learn more about the Pack Saddle Caterpillar here, click to: File. Acharia stimulea larva.jpg

Thanks to CM for helping us all! - Barbara Armitage

Time for someone to start thinking about PLAN B

Our debt load gets worse with each passing day, and could be a whole lot worse if the hospital were forced to close

By Richard Raines
Personal Commentary

From what I've been reading and hearing, it sounds like we, the citizens of Adair County are going to be "compelled" to pay the debts of Westlake Hospital one way or another.

Commentary: Will Fiscal Court give leadership to save WRH?

If history provides insight, the outlook is bleak, writer notes. After the people had spoken and in 1949. when a 20 bed hospital with two thirds of the cost borne by the Federal Government under the Hill-Burton Act, it was stopped cold in its tracks, Enter the Fiscal Court, slouching toward infamy, ready and willing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It would take 9 more years before Adair Memorial Hospital became a reality.
The QUESTION TODAY: Will today's Fiscal Court man up and meet the challenge and save Westlake Regional Hospital from a sale or closure, either of which will be the worst disaster in the 200 year history of the county? We know they can. And we think they will. -EW

By Jim Garner

"Maybe the one set of people, the Adair Fiscal Court (Magistrates & CJE) who can provide the leadership to save the hospital for the community, will do so, Now."

If history is any indicator, this will occur immediately after icicles form in Southern climes.

In the fall of 1949, in the most overwhelming bipartisan vote ever cast in Adair County, voters approved a $120,000 hospital bond by an 85%-15% margin. Under the Hill-Burton Act then in effect, the federal government would shoulder one-third of the construction cost. Shortly thereafter, the Act was amended such that the government would bear two-thirds of the cost, and in June, 1950, the Adair County News received notification by wire from Washington, D.C. the hospital had been approved:

Vicky Pike appeals for Tax Recall volunteers

Victoria Pike writes:
We still need volunteers to circulate the hospital recall petition in some parts of the county. We have one at the Flatwoods Diner but further south of that, we need help in the Breeding/Sparksville area as well as Milltown and toward the Green and Taylor County lines where we have no country stores. We will be at the Adair County Courthouse Annex Wed. Aug. 8, 2012 from 10:30 am until 7 pm. for all 16 precincts to come in and sign or get petitions to circulate. If you can help, please call me at 384-3348 or 634-2604 or Cynthia Rowe at 384-5431. Jay Johnson, 634-3398, Wendy Gousha 384-1776, and Ron Carter also have petitions. Most all country stores have one but let us know if yours is in need of one or needs more sheets.

We thank all those who have allowed us to leave petitions in their businesses. We have not asked if they are for or against the tax but only if they would allow us to place them in their business.

Again, folks this petition is for one thing and one thing only, letting the people of Adair County decide. For far too long, only a few in this county have made the important decisions. This may be only a small step in the right direction but we can make our voices heard if we stick together.

The tax maybe imposed on us at a later date, but let's stop it for now and let the dust settle and see how much we ACTUALLY OWE before we give the Adair County Hospital Board a blank check to spend, spend, spend.

Also, as Wendy Gousha stated in her editorial, this is not a petition to close the hospital, or stop the selling of the hospital. Victoria Pike - Victoria Pike

Citizen of the Real World: Opinion - Corporation buying company

William Reed writes:
In the real world where I come from, if a Corporation buys a Company, not only do they get all its assets, but they also assume its debts. Why should the citizens of Adair County have to be taxed just so they can purchase our hospital. If our government wants to impose the tax, then let them put it on the November Ballot and let the citizens vote yea or nay for the tax. - William Reed

More on that bad caterpillar which stung that woman

William Reed writes:
This is the Io Moth caterpillar. It is overall light yellowish-green, but along each side there is a narrow reddish line bordered below by a white line. Grown caterpillars are two inches long and covered with branched, black-pointed green spines. They feed on a variety of plants including corn, roses, willow, linden, elm, oak, locust, apple, beech, ash, currant, and clover. Yes and they do sting. Per: R. Tax has been surprise; outsourcing already underway

'This brings us around to the one question we ask again and again: If someone wants to buy us, they believe they can make money with Westlake Regional Hospital. If they can do it, why can't we?- PEGGY FUDGE

By Peggy Fudge
Personal commentary

I am embarassed to admit my ignorance of laws about taxes. I pretty much whine and pay, but the hospital tax has brought a question to my mind: Just who has the right to institute a tax on a local population?

It seems odd that a body of appointed members such as a hospital board can tax us.

Larry Smith says fog a factor - thick as a brick

Larry Smith, the intrepid commuter to the WAVE, FM 92.7 radio studio and Tall Tower at the top of the Russell Creek Hills snug up against the Adair-Russell County line, reports a perilous fog between Campbellsville and Columbia this morning. "Visibility was almost zero on both sides of the Green River Bridge," he said, "and not much better the rest of the way." He urges caution for commuters until this fog of August rises or burns off. "Fog is a factor," he said. "It's thick as a brick. Everybody needs to use extreme caution if they are out early."
