Mr. Ennis: Think cold

By Linda Reid Marcum Waggener

"Think cold." That was the mantra of Mr. James Ennis, geography teacher at Metcalfe County High School, when the class of 1966 sat in humid, sweltering, un-airconditioned classrooms.

"Think Alaska", he'd say with a devilish grin in his eyes, daring any of his students to faint from heat and fall out of the uncomfortable chairs.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Comfort Lies, a sonnet

Comfort lies
- a sonnet about writing short poems
A shorter poem is more likely read.
My haiku and my sonnets are my art.
And when at last the physical is dead
the words may keep the longings of my heart.

With syllables but seventeen I hope
to stir a silence into sounds and sights
that stretch the mind to know more ways to cope
responding to both warnings and delights.

And fourteen lines should be enough I think
to agitate or calm the questing souls
who do at truth not slink away or blink
but make their peace by learning life's controls.

Some ask why write in these constricted forms?
I answer comfort lies in well-worn norms.

- Robert Stone, 8 July 2012

Carol Perkins: Just a Little Something

Grandparents are the main culprits in grandkids buying habits
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Why all the fuss about the lake?

By Carol Perkins

"Could I just get a little something?"

We adults have trained youngsters to expect to get what they want most ofthe time. That doesn't mean it happens immediately, but often they wearparents down until they cave. Because we start buying for them beforetheir birth, we actually are setting a tone for what will follow as theyage. Yes, it is our fault that kids want and want, and grandparents arethe main culprits.

Dust Devils: Small one seen in The Flatwoods, downtown

Creates attention, but causes no damage
No local photo of phenomenon, so far

By Ed Waggener

A small dust devil (Wikipedia: Dust Devils) swept through downtown Flatwoods yesterday afternoon, Saturday, July 7, 2012, grabbing the attention of many, but, as with most dust devils, (aka dustnado) it caused no damage beyond putting more particulates in the air.

It was gone before cameras could be drawn from holsters.

An elegant stylist - politics as balance

One of the delights of living all day in a bookstore is that one is always discovering new writers who may have been there all along.

A couple of weeks ago I discovered Ward Just. His name was vaguely familiar, but I had never opened one of his books.

Chuck Hinman: Most Beneficial Subject taken in High School

This Chuck Hinman column is sure to bring back memories with anyone who had Latin I under Miss Frances Russell at Adair County High School, or Biology I under David Lawrence there - he taught root words from Greek and Latin so well a language student could often do as well on tests as one interested purely in science. A loud 'Amen,' on this column. - Ed Waggener. This column, It's Just Me Again: Most Beneficial Subject Taken in High School, was written by Chuck Hinman 5 February 2004.
The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman IJMA No. 315: Memories of 4th of July's Past

By Chuck Hinman

As I reflect on the adequacy of my educational experience, particularly as it relates to elementary school and high school, I am impressed that I owe an immense debt of gratitude to unknown forebears for their insight. What a responsibility they had in providing an educational system that would adequately meet my needs in years to come with few limitations, as well as the needs of everyone attending those schools.

Kentucky Color: Blackberries and Bears

Evidence left by bear in South ADAIR County places its weight at 119 pounds, Billy Joe Fudge and unnamed associate agree. Bear Pile also yielded evidence that Bear had been consuming vast amounts of the the county's finest blackberries. This paper adds a new dimension to telling what size animals are - beyond Dr. Neat, beyond telekinemensuration (weighing moving animal from moving car, already perfected by BJF - to knowing bear weights by size of bear leavings

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

The Blackberry seeds in a bear pile found this past week in Southern Adair County make pretty convincing evidence that Black Bear are avid berry pickers.

After close examination, visual that is, the landowner and your humble Kentucky Color member of the Blue Ribbon Bear Board estimate the size of the bear which made this deposit to be 119 pounds.

Last week's yard sales successful, despite heat

Despite the heat, it appears that last week's yard sales around the area were quite successful, as this one was:Dean M. Roach writes
Thank you guys for helping to make our yard sale a great hit. I'm convinced that you sent people directly to us. Love your community support!!!! Because He Lives!!! - Dean M. Roach
Thanks. Dean Roach: We've heard from others who were pleased with sales, too. And, additionally, so many are telling us of the added benefits besides the extra income: Cuts down on clutter, helps someone else who needs useful items, and it cuts down on haul arounds. More importantly, there's a social aspect in person-to-person selling, on the individual level, which is lasting bonus. -EW
