July 4th Fireworks at the Fair: Thirst quenchers at Band Booths

2012-07-04 - 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne. Fireworks watchers can expect the dry warm air to create a thirst: The Adair Band can help. Cool Band Mom Lachana Scholl was getting a bag of ice ready for the parched crowds expected tonight. The band will have water, iced drinks and Snow Cones and hot Juicy Grilled Hamburgers were already coming off the grill for the Band Food Booths at the track crossing at the Adair County Fairgrounds at the same time. The Band Boosters are now pros at providing fair food. Short lines were already forming at a little past six this evening as early bird fireworks fans were joining the crowd already in place for the Family Fun Games, underway. Besides the several food stands the band has, local BBQ man Rerun Cornelison will be preparing food at the show as well. The low humidity is making the night air more comfortable than in almost all prior years.

A big moment in Adair County Fair History: The night Rodney Thompson - 16 then - won the car.

By Rodney L. Thompson Sr.

As the Adair County Fair approaches, I need to tell the story about winning the car.

For several years around 1958, the tickets for the new car to be given away at the fair were free, but you had to be present to win.

Hot weather: A reminder to remember our four-legged friends

Life at Little Cake, Adair County, KY
Click on headline for complete news and comments letter w/photo(s)

By Wendy Gousha

Just wanted to remind everyone that during these times of extreme hot weather we remember our four legged friends.

They can get over heated very easily and need fresh water throughout the day and plenty of shade. Remember too that our four legged friends can be scared of loud noises, so make sure that they are safe and out of harms way when celebrating 4th of July with fireworks.

Mike Watson: Independence Day

Independence Day and Adair County: Many Revolutionary War veterans came to settle in what is now AdairCounty. Some lived long enough to file for pensions, most late inlife, when the rigors of war and frontier living had taken great toll.Daniel Trabue lived to be an old man and was pensioned; ColonelWilliam Casey died in 1816, the victim of a hard fought existence. Wehave yet to identify all the veterans of the Revolution who lived herein Adair County, but we continue to quest, to preserve their memoryevery day, not just in July. - MIKE WATSON

By Mike Watson

John Adams said that surely the 2nd of July 1776 would go down in theannals of history as the day of birth of a new nation, the UnitedStates of America. Of course that did not come to pass, as we observeJuly 4th as Independence Day.

Photos should be unedited and without type overlays of any kind (we'll post credits you send). While we don't promise to post every photo, we'll do our best to post the best. -EW
