Scenic Adair Co. KY: Pleasing architecture

2012-07-02 - Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Adair County Craftsman Dave Shields has been working on a project on the Jeffries Building, now owned by Eva and David Rigney, which involves a measure of preservation. The decorative iron on the front of the building as been painted to protect it; above Shields is measuring the face of what appears to have been a plaster face on rough face brick, most likely to assure a smooth face for a sign on the grand old building. Shields checked other buildings on the Square and found other ironwork by "G.L. Mesker & Co., Evansville, Ind." on the fronts of the Mike Harris Buildings and the M & P Variety Store, as well as on the Dan Antle/Reed Bros. Insurance Buildings. Somewhat similarly designed patterns on the ironwork can be found on those examples.

More On Respecting the Flag

Comments re article 52878 Geo Kolbenschlag Agrees with Larry Walker on flag etiquette

Reade Heskamp writes:
About once a year this subject comes up. There are a number of sources for information about FLAG ETIQUETTE. While they don't all agree 100%, there are a number of specific which are in agreement, among them: the flag should never be dirty and/or tattered, never flown after dark unless illuminated, never be used as a decoration on clothing or in any other way, never touch the ground.

It's so easy to get right. All you need to do is respect it, perhaps as much as you expect other people to respect you.

Reade Heskamp, ex of Coburg
Reade, we appreciate your consistent input on the matter. As with previous discussions about proper respect for the flag on ColumbiaMagazine.com, we strongly recommend the US Senate as the authority on questions about the flag.

The United States Flag: Federal Law Relating to Display and Associated Questions can be downloaded from the following link: http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30243.pdf.

Memorial flowers from Haven Hill blown across KY 206

Ed McQuaide writes:
Last night's (July 1, 2012) high winds have blown off dozens of Memorial flowers from the Haven Hill Cemetery. The ditch line on the east side has caught the majority. There are about a dozen on my side of the road from the West side. Hopefully they'll find their way back to proper placement before being discarded. - Ed McQuaide
Thanks, Ed McQuaide. We appreciate the note on the storm and invite others to send news and submit photo(s) from other parts of the county affected.
