Mrs. Hinman was surely blessed with such a husband

Reader hopes there are lots of Red Door smells in their eternity

Carol Goodin Parker writes:
How blessed Mrs. Hinman was to be loved so completely by such a wonderful husband. I teared up as I read this story. Mr. Hinman's awareness of how to reach the depths of his wife's spirit and keep it with him until he joined her is overwhelming. Hopefully, there's lots of Red Door smells in their eternity. --Carol Goodin Parker

Sharon Whitehurst: Of drought and thunderstorms

By Sharon Whitehurst

GRADYVILLE, KY, (2012-06-24) - As I lugged water this morning to a few cherished plants I thought of summer heat and drought in other places and times

In Wyoming a lack of water goes with the territory. Nothing is grown there without elaborate and expensive irrigation.

Thanks, Margaret Taylor, for the astute observation and for the choice of tenses, as you and most readers of CM probably already know, Mr. Hinman died in December, 2011 (Chuck Hinman, Bartlesville, OK, (1922-2011). But through his writing, he will always be with us. In that sense, he is a jewel. -EW

Chuck Hinman: A smell that really turns me on

The perfume carries the fragrance of lily of the valley, peach and plum blossoms, jasmine and musk, and when his Connie wore it he was more aware of her presence that her genes seemed to be talking to him, he writes.
The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman: What I Respect About My Best Friend

By Chuck Hinman

A smell that really turns me on

In 1989, our daughter was wearing a fragrance that really tantalized my sense of smell. It was a new product by Elizabeth Arden called Red Door. Connie, my wife, always liked for me to pick out her fragrances for her, because she said I spent more for the scent than her conscience would allow her to spend.

She began wearing Red Door and its fragrance started my sense of smell on a roller coaster ride. I loved it then and I love it now.

Carol Perkins: Bursting Forth in Song

The wonderful, exuberating power of one's one voice. (Heard alone). Amazing how much confidence one has when no one is watching or in this case, listening. -CP.
For the next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins shares Great Idea! Survival showers for couples

By Carol Perkins

Occasionally, I will burst into song as I am riding along, alone, with nothing but a tune in my head and a few lyrics that I can remember. On my way to Glasgow the other day, I sprang into a variety of show tunes from "The Sound of Music" to "My Fair Lady." Not knowing the words to any of the songs from beginning to end, I repeated the lines I did know, growing more powerful in my presentation with each verse. Notice I said I was alone. Amazing how much confidence one has when no one is watching or in this case, listening.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Too much of me

Too much of me
- a sonnet of the sturdy hold of habit
My friends have told me plainly to my face
I talk too much and listen not enough.
Decorum wants to keep me in my place
and I self-righteous that advice rebuff.

To laugh at my own jokes is wont condemned.
I do not even comfort self by cheat.
My stories apropos, not hawed and hemmed,
will drive a point or pointless meet defeat.

I loving you protest I love you not.
Commitment would my story tear apart.
New themes not habit would determine plot
and resolution still unknown break heart.

When I in others own what I may be,
I fear they likewise see too much of me.
- Robert Stone, 24 June 2012
