The Gifts of Gradyville documents a shared sense of closeness

We need to hand on a sense of place and family to our children and grandchildren. -SHARON WHITEHURST

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
I grew up in a rural farming community in Vermont which had also been home to my parents and grandparents. Melissa's story documents the same sense of closeness and caring that I cherish from my own childhood.Although I've come to Gradyville rather late in life and the names and families are not mine, I appreciate the memories and stories that are published on CM. We need to hand on a sense of place and family to our children and grandchildren. Thank you, CM, for creating a venue for this kind of sharing. --Sharon Whitehurst

Gifts of Gradyville: Shared through stories of (much) older sibs

Leanna Bennett writes:
It is no secret or surprise that Melissa and Lenny are my older siblings which unfortunately for me, did not give me the opportunity to grow up with them or share the Gradyville experiences that they did. I don't remember my grandparents at all, but their legends will always live on through these stories. Melissa and Lenny both have made a conscious effort to tell me stories about my grandparents and their childhood in a manner that makes me feel as if I was there when it took place.

I have never kept it a secret that I love being the baby of the family, but the fact of the matter is that I am secretly jealous of the time and memories that they share.

I feel that Melissa and Lenny both are responsible for connecting me to a part of my heritage that I otherwise would have missed out on, and no words can ever express what this means to me. I am not a great writer like Melissa, nor do I have the patience that she does, and I am not a great leader like Lenny, but I am who I am today greatly in part because of what these two have taught me to be. I love them both for this and many other reasons and I am so proud to be a part of their family.

(Let me emphasize one thing....I am the MUCH younger sibling!!!) --LEANNA BENNETT

By Chuck Wolfe

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 18, 2012) - Movement of an overweight/overdimensional "super load" of equipment from a dock in Louisville to a plant outside Harrodsburg will require temporary closure of some traffic routes, beginning Tuesday night, June 19, 2012.

Most of the move will occur at night, under Kentucky State Police escort, to minimize disruption of traffic.

It is expected to reach the Wausau Paper plant, north of Harrodsburg, in the early hours of Thursday, June 21, 2012. - Chuck Wolfe

The Gifts of Gradyville

There comes a realization that the best "things" to give a child are not things at all. -MELISSA STONE. Reprinted on the occasion of the announcement that the church which inspired the story is re-opening Sunday, June 24, 2012.

By Melissa Stone

I think we, as adults, are often preoccupied with giving to the children in our lives bigger and better "things". We all do it. We all seem to want our children to have all the conveniences that we claim to never have had.

My trip to Gradyville, Kentucky, was an afterthought

A recent trip to Gradyville, Kentucky reminded me of something that we all know--we just sometimes tuck it way back in our mind where it's not as easily accessed, as it should be. That "something" is the realization that the best "things" to give a child are not things at all.

Carol Perkins shares Great Idea! Survival showers for couples

(Mandatory, Maybe - by CJE Decree) Survival Showers: A revolutionary party idea from Edmonton, Metcalfe County, which could do for Kentucky what the the Hill Sisters of Louisville's song, Happy Birthday to You, a catchy little jingle made famous by Richard Lee Walker's melodious public renditions, did: Put the Commonwealth on the Map. Remember, you first heard it from Carol Perkins. -CM
For the next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Raising tobacco was second nature here

By Carol Sulllivan Perkins

I have an idea. After a couple has been married fifty years, the community could get together and throw them a wedding shower (or maybe a survival shower). By then, they will have likely used every gift they ever received or put whatever trinkets they were given in a yard sale. They could use sheets to replace the worn-out ones, new kitchen towels to replace the ones with holes but have some life left in them, and finally throw out the chipped plates and cups. Couples, who last that long, should be rewarded for their endurance with a house full of new stuff. Sounds good to me.
