Proud of Locks of Love Donors

Fredia Melton writes:
I am very proud of all of these young girls that gave such a special gift to Locks of Love. I am very proud of my granddaughter, Kalli Bailey, on the far right. She is a very loving and caring little girl. This is her third time donating her hair. Since I myself am a 2 time breast cancer survivor this really touches my heart. Thanks again to all these young girls and a special thanks, I am so blessed to have you in my life and I love you from Memaw to Kalli Jade Bailey!!! --Fredia Melton

Tucker's Station plots look like gardening magazine photos

Maury Lewis writes:
Ed you MUST go out to Barbara Armitage's house and take pictures of her beautiful vegetable garden, it looks like something from a gardening magazine. - Maury Lewis
Thanks, Maury Lewis: It's now on my list, unless any one of the much better photographers - such as melewi - does it first. In fact, we've been running shy of good garden photos, though we've windshielded surveyed a lot of them. -EW

Poetry by Robert Stone: All who went before, a sonnet

All who went before
- a sonnet for Father's Day
The youngest do not think about such things.
They most important are by actions done.
A steady growth until they find their wings
is instinct not some lesson-learned prize won.

The young adults still think of settling in.
They self-define by shifting goals desired.
An unsure time until they work begin<
another generation be inspired.

The oldest think about their futures made.
They will continue by examples set.
A solid history until the shade
of trouble, time, and distance wreak forget.

One can with luck but limited explore
the joys unknown to all who went before

- Robert Stone, 17 June 2012

Teasel, another exotic cat, lives in Gradyville, KY

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
One of these exotic 'tigers' shares our Kentucky home. She was a tiny kitten when she appeared one chilly evening outside our house in Wyoming quite on her own as though she had been dropped from the sky.I named her Teasel. She is beautiful, very intelligent, a bit demanding, rather naughty at times, but always a charming companion. Teasel weighs in at 13.4 pounds. --Sharon Whitehurst

News of murder of Sarah B. Hart revives rules lived by in city

Although violent crime has not been as big a factor here and it's easy to let down guard, the tragedy this week is a reminder that terrible crimes can happen, even here. Children should be taught self protection measures also. It's a fine line to do so, and not live in fear everyday either Jennifer Parker writes

By Jennifer Parker

I totally agree with Prof. Dan Phillips.

I was born and grew up the largest part of my life in big city areas of California; moved to Adair Co., KY almost 18 years ago.

When I arrived I still lived with the same "safety" rules I left California with and it was difficult to imagine not having to peer under my car or into the interior before getting into it, or having my keys ready in hand, to jab someone's eye out if necessary-for example.

Chuck Hinman: What I Respect About My Best Friend

Chuck Hinman, remembering his Best Friend, Ken Campbell.
The next earlier Chuck Himman column:Chuck Hinman, IJMA 333: It's a Boy!

By Chuck Hinman

My best friend is my former neighbor, Ken Campbell. I first met Ken the day we moved into the neighborhood at 5017 Bridle Road in Bartlesville. It was in 1973.

I would have laughed out loud if I had known that thirty years later I would write about Ken as my best friend.

The Hill: (Jamestown Hill) as it was commonly known

Life was special growing up on Jamestown Hill, especially for the babies of the family. In those days, the worst thing that could happen to a kid was to have someone tell a parent about misbehavior - it meant, for the older kids, some stern, sometimes harsh discipline. But for the babies of the families - Joe Pyles and Ralph Roy Waggener fit that description - even their great Finis Pyles' Studebaker pickup v. E.P. Waggener's Chevrolet pickup truck race around Graded Hill did not get them into nigh enough trouble with Finis and E.P. to satisfy older sibs - and it happened when they were about 10 years old. Some memories of growing up on Jamestown Hill for Father's Day, including names of some of Jamestown Hill kid-dom great times and names. -CM

By Ed's little brother, Ralph Roy Waggener

Growing up on the hill was special. I had 2 brothers and 3 sisters and I was referred toas the baby because I was the youngest.

Our house was the main meeting place for allchildren of all ages because of the spread of the Waggener Clan's ages.
