Professor Dan Phillips comments on big city crime in rural setting

I wanted to share a few thoughts about the Sarah Hart murder. I didn't know her personally but she and my wife, Kelly, are the same age, went to school together, both had 3 children, and jogged on the same stretch of road. Mrs. Hart's pharmacist husband, Ryan, helped me with my insurance company concerning paying for medicine when Kelly was sick during her pregnancy with our son, Noah. -DAN PHILLIPS

By Dan Phillips, Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice
Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY 42642

I didn't know Sarah Hart but my Kelly could certainly identify with her and this murder has caused Kelly and others to become very afraid and worried about their community.

Saturday morning guest: Eddie Rabbit

Click on headline for story of Eddie Rabbit and picture(s)

By Linda Waggener

A just-a-bit-older-than-baby rabbit graciously shared his hospitality on this one acre mighty fertile farm we occupy rather peaceably together. He provided morning entertainment for too short a skit. I first saw him (I thought of him as a him because of a warrior-like stance among the other livestock), along the rock wall out back where he pounced at a dove and then scolded a robin invader for glide-landing right into his territory.

Towering Tree: Sign from Heaven, to Paradise - Paradise Lane

Album: The Towering Tree. Click on headline for introduction and photo(s)
Old Coddger brought reality back from whimsy, suggesting said the towering tree seen from Veterans Bypass doesn't have a reason why, it just is.. But is it, just is?

The Towering Tree, noticed for so long by travelers along the Adair Veterans Memorial Bypass and on Greensburg Street, Kentucky, is now a much better documented landmark, since curiosity got the best of Mike Sneed, who explored every inch of where it looked like it would be until he found it - in his backyard.

A charming coincidence, the arrow of the crown points down from the Heavens to Paradise on Earth for some fortunate Adair Countians - Paradise Lane, in the hidden residential development off Lampton Lane, and cut off from The Pines of Lindsey Wilson by Columbia International Airport.

Lorene Martens, whose home on Bluegrass Drive affords an easy view of the Towering Tree, sent some photos, which are now attached to this introduction, along with links to stories which may be necessary.

Downtown People A visit with Smokie and his folks

15 Minutes on the Square: Making eye contact with Smokie, of the wonderful Kentucky land of Gov. Steve Beshear, of Christian, KY. Breeding bears, a cougar-after-a-deer on Greenbriar Ridge Road, Edgar Cayce, Little Green Men near Hopkinsville, KY, Daniel Boone, Berenice Flowers, Steve Scott, and Richard Bartlett, and, of course, Dan and Linda Affolter. Some days I realize that about only things I know I learned fortuitously, listening at the Fountain Plaza, Columbia's extemporaneous catch-up place, the story telling and news hub of the community. -EW)

By Ed Waggener

Whether Smokie, the Downtown Dog of the Night, decides to actively engage his public or maintain guard over his pickup, he always looks deep into the soul of people he encounters.
