BBRB member K. Davis sees Grizzly in bear in Woody's Bottom

Comments re photo 45571 Finally indisputable photographic proof on Greater Bliss Bear

Kenny Davis writes:
After studying that picture of the Bliss Bear for a good while now. I have come to the conclusion that it is a Black Bear/Grizzly cross. There is no other explanation for the hump on its shoulders, a common characteristic of the Grizzly. But the short nose denotes Black Bear. It also appears to a case of Mange. - Kenny Davis, BRBB Member
Kenny Davis. This is absolutely brilliant insight and so glad your are, but local BRBB experts who's actully studied the bear at close range in Woody's Bottom, unemcumbered by heavy camera equipment as Miz Victoria was, have found no trace of Ursus arctos horribilis. It a purebred registry eligible, Ursus cabellasos polystrenis.. Not fractious. I have seen the bear, but would concur that it may have case Mange. All the more we learn about the bear, however, the better. -EW

Longstanding supporter of CM files complaint with ombudsman

By Melissa Stone writes:
I have long been an ardent supporter of all things ColumbiaMagazine related. However, I have my first ever complaint. The frequent wonderful photos of all the delicious looking food items is causing me to have yearnings that are not in keeping with my recent vow to attempt a healthy lifestyle!

Oops! We didn't read Miz Victoria's report carefully enough

Sincere apologies to our readers. And to Miz Victoria.

In our haste to catch up we may have inadvertently scared the bejeezus out of all the phobia freaks among our cozy little readership. We will do better in the future. Miz Victoria had inserted "Styrofoam bear," and we overlooked the modifier.

Still, there are greater lessons for everybody else. It shows just how terrible it is when people don't take their internet seriously. One cannot fault the landlord, Mr. Jimmy, for erecting a monument to this wonderful icon of the wilds of Adair County.

But the reprehensibility of the irresponsible prankster who tricked Miz Victoria - and more worse - temporarily caught the BBRB offguard, is inexcusable! Old Rummy would have waterboarded them to the last one of there was. -EW

And a postcript: We're hoping our bear blase neighbors Casey and Cumberland Counties, who pay no more attention to a bear and cub than to a skateboarder, will overlook our excitement about Adair County bears. We're going to something of them being here! Don't think our board of trade or travel board will let the opportunities for bear industry profit pass by. -ED

Miz Victoria sends photo of Bear in Woody's Bottom

The CM factotum and aides are working throught the massive backlog of in-box communications, and this item just stood out to be posted immediately: It came in yesterday. We'll be able to put story in better context later, but for now, it is the sworn obligation of the Blue Ribbon Bear Board to apprise readers of the danger, if any, of this bear in Woody's Bottom.

Miz Victoria writes:
Well, here is the bear (see accompanying photo) in Woody's bottom as of 5 pm. Styrofoam bear. Not exactly sure how it got there but I received a call that one had been sighted and for me to come quick. And I did. Vickie Pike
Thanks, Miz Victoria. We can always depend on you for level-headedness in a crisis:: We'll post your bulletin, to be on the safe side. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no expert on the fractiousness of bears, particularly from looking at a photograph - that would lie more in the area of expertise of Bear Board Dean Garry Coomer or bear experts Johnny Vaughan or Larry Legg, all of whom my betters in this department. - Ed Waggener

Call, if email communication does not get action

If you've emailed and didn't get the action you wanted, please call 270-250-2730. Occasionally, essential information is not included in an email, we're at a total loss for how to contact the individual - and then a second email arrives, apologizing for not including the information in the first one - and it too, fails to include the information!

All we can do is mope and cry and feel bad - with no hope of finding the person or the information!

Some posts are pending such a call: 270-250-2730. - Ed Waggener

Second session: Budget Hearing, City for June 14, 2012

Public shows no evidence, by attendance, of interest in budget hearing, despite Mayor Harris' invitation to participate

Mayor Mark D. Harris and the Columbia City Council held a lengthy hearing Monday evening, June 11, 2012, which started at 5:30pmCT and last over two hours. The meeting was attended by all members of the Council, some city employees, and members of the print media.

The city is wrestling with a two years in a row deficit spending budget, balanced by eating into the yearly carryover:

Among items being considered:
  • Raises for city employees. Will be presented in Thursday session.

  • Level of support, if any, for outside organizations such as the local Chamber of Commerce and Little League, as well as level of involvement in Downtown in such projects as the preservation of the Adair County Courthouse.
Everything is on the table, and the Mayor has invited the public to attend and participate. While Monday night's session had passionate moments, the public participation hardly reached the level of underwhelming.

The next session is Thursday, June 14, 2012, starting, again, at 5:30pmCT, in the Council Meeting Room, City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY.

Miz Victoria: Bear in the neighborhood with my girls

A BLUE RIBBON BEAR BOARD REPORT: The Steve, Sue Sarah Wilson bear sighting Sunday, June 10, 2012, has caused quite a stir, even though any number of people now say they've seen a bear, or a bear with a cub in the area in the past year. The reasons why they haven't reported it are many - didn't want to put up with ridicule from idjits, just didn't think of reporting the event, - or they didn't want the bear(s) hunted or bothered, as was the case of a sighting on Orban Branham Road, plum nelly in Bear Paradise Cumberland County. Greater Bliss is not the epicenter of Bear sightings, but some of the gentry are more than a little upcited: Including cattle baron Miz Victoria, who sent this report first, tinged with just a little anxiety as the humankind/bear territory accord is being hammered out yet again.

Miz Victoria Pike writes:
Ed, I hear there is a bear in the neighborhood near my girls - cows for those of you out of the loop. Now, we have had a pot bellied pig, a bob cat, and now a bear. What is the neighborhood coming to? Along with the the normal varmints, we deal with such as possum, skunk, red fox and raccoon, on a daily basis, we could open a zoo out here next to Wally World.

May have to get Mr. Bud Mullins after that bear, if we can get him out of the sinkhole this hot muggy weather we are having today. Hope we can get pictures of this bear next time. I hear he was over on Woody's side. I will check in with him later to see what he knows on this bear story. Vicky --Miz Victoria Pike
Comments about: Spotting bear pretty amazing - but scary at same time
