Louisville Water Works/AC Courthouse architectural smilarities

2012-06-03 - Louisville, KY - Photo from collection of Ann Heskamp Curtis.
Ironwork similarities, Courthouse and Louisville Water Works: The iron work at the top of the Courthouse in the Larry Smith photo is similar to that of the Louisville Water Works Crescent Hill Plant. This possibly might be because the architect who designed the Adair County Courthouse, Harry P. McDonald, was superintendent of construction of the Crescent Hill Plant of the Louisville Water Works. A Virginia native and a civil engineering graduate of Washington and Lee University, H.P. McDonald came to Louisville in 1873 to work on the structure. In 1884 the Adair County Courthouse was designed by the firm H. P. McDonald Bros. -Ann Heskamp Curtis

Carol Perkins: The Pointer Sisters

Travel: You know it's a nice place when Lynn Pemberton discovers it on the advice of the Pointer Sisters. Lodging at the Turquoise Bay in Panama City - where they always stay. A bit of wisdom one can only learn over garden salad at the the Bingo Bistro in Edmonton, Metcalfe County, KY.

Donna Summers died last week. She was a star in the age of disco and I remember her best for the hit, "She Works Hard for Her Money." Seems as if many of the greats of my era are passing away.

Larry Walker adds details to the Kessler's old 1st National photo

Larry Walker writes:
It's the same location of the present day main office teller lobby at 224 S. Public Square. The teller cage is on the same side of the lobby today. It was moved to the right side of the lobby around 1965 and then back to the left side when the old Adair County News Office building addition was added. The staircase in the picture is the same staircase used today to get to the second floor bookkeeping department. The second story did not exist at the time of the photo, just the area over the vault that contains the windows. --Larry Walker

Poetry by Robert Stone: Womb of war, a villanelle

Womb of war
- a villanelle reflecting on Ponder Anew, a WWII memoir
Never when
youth abloom.
Think again.

Always yen
known resume.
Never when.

Last hit den
mere kaboom.
Think again.

People pen
sure of doom,
never when.

Wiser men
dispel gloom?
Think again.

Beyond ken
where entomb
never when.
Think again.
- Robert Stone, 27 May 2012

Mississippi Storytelling

Looking at an Irish storyteller telling a story about a storyteller last week set me to thinking about how the art works in this country. Now there are storytellers amongst us - some mighty good ones. But I thunk me a thought that to find a really good storyteller who not only told a fine tale, but who created a complete society out of which such stories might arise, I might have to go further afield.

(Ad) Please be patient: an E-Machine ready, soon. He hopes.

Results happen so quickly in CM classifieds that sometimes doing the deletions necessary to keep the list fresh is temporarily too much. We're working on improvements. If your ad stays up longer than it should let us know. Thanks to Mr. Caldwell for his patience; we're looking forward to posting many more ads for him!

Rick Caldwell writes:
Thanks for taking my ad down. I was getting calls left and right for the items even though they were sold. Thanks Columbia Magazine. You guys rock. I'll use your classifieds again. Your classifieds have always worked better. PS: I will probably have a E-machine for sale next week. - Rick Caldwell
Thanks, Rick Caldwell: And to CM Classified Readers: Almost all the response we're getting these days is that CM Classifieds work incredibly well. Of course it makes our day when we get a letter like this one from Mr. Caldwell. And, apologies for our mistake leaving the ad up an extra two days. It was my mistake. We'll do better. We always want to know how an ad worked: Almost universally, the news we get is that they work unbelievably well. But it's also important to let us know what doesn't work. We appreciate your feedback. And, again, thanks, Rick Caldwell. -Ed Waggener
