Old Photo: Kesslers have facts which pique interest for more

2012-06-02 - 224 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from Collection of Eddie & Tiffany Kessler.
Eddie and Tiffany Kessler have this grand old photo of the lobby and tellers' cage in the old First National Bank, the forerunner of today's First & Farmers National Bank, which occupies this space and more on the Southwest Corner of the Public Square. "The information on the back of the photo reads First National Bank with Horace Cundiff and Bruce Montgomery. I was in the back., and it was signed Vern T or Vera T," Tiffany Kessler writes. "Looks to be circa 1920s or 30s. Assuming this was on the Columbia Square, not sure where the bank's building was at that time," she added. Larry Walker update, 12pm noon CT Sunday, June 3, 2012:: It's the same location of the present day main office teller lobby at 224 S. Public Square. The teller cage is on the same side of the lobby today. It was moved to the right side of the lobby around 1965 and then back to the left side when the old Adair County News Office building addition was added. The staircase in the picture is the same staircase used today to get to the second floor bookkeeping department. The second story did not exist at the time of the photo, just the area over the vault that contains the windows. --Larry Walker. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. It is a case for the history cousins AND Larry Walker, maybe the Master Mind of all the Walkers, Cundiffs, and Montgomerys there are. Send using any Contact/Submit button. -CM

Good Manners: On the choicest part of the fruit

From Green County, KY: Best choices are bottom slice of tomato with fewer seeds
Comments re photo 45431 Good Manners Taking the center slice for thineself

Dale Curry writes:
Ed, I knew my seminary learning didn't go quite far enough. All the time I was spending my time trying to obey the Ten Commandments and along comes this instruction from Hezekiah about how to slice a tomato and I find that I've even messed up here without realizing it.

I like the two (usually you can get two slices if you have a sharp knife) slices from the bottom of the tomato - these are the slices without a lot of seeds in them!

Maybe this Methodist who got his learning at a Baptist seminary needs to go back and search through Hezekiah to see what else I've done wrong. - Dale Curry
Bro. Curry: Thanks. This seed business does present a dilemma for the self-indulgent tomato eater. -EW

(Paid Ad): Mark Polston sends thanks to voters

Mark F. Polston and family, photo, left

Even though I did not win the vote total I feel like a victor in this campaign. I was uplifted by the words of encouragement and support I received everywhere I went. - MARK F. POLSTON

Dear Citizens:

To all of my friends and supporters in Adair, Casey, Pulaski and Russell counties I want to express a heartfelt thank you to each of you who voted for me for State Senator in the May 22nd primary. Even though I did not win the vote total I feel like a victor in this campaign. I was uplifted by the words of encouragement and support I received everywhere I went. Old acquaintances were renewed and I made many new friends while campaigning. Many of you shared my vision for a strong Kentucky and worked very hard for my candidacy. For all these reasons I am proud and humbled.

I want to especially thank Danny Voils and Coy Bray, who were among the first to approach me and ask me to become a candidate, I appreciate the confidence you showed in me by asking me to run for this office. I've learned many things and this experience has made me a bolder advocate for the things in which I believe. I also want to thank Sen. Vernie McGaha for his support and advice and Todd Hoskins for being a statesman and supporting my candidacy. Both of them went out on a limb for me when they didn't have to, I will be forever grateful. To the voters of Adair, Casey and Russell counties thank you for the overwhelming support you gave to me, I am thankful for your trust. To the voters of Pulaski county thank you for allowing me the opportunity to seek this office, I appreciate those who voted for me and trust those who didn't still consider me a friend and patriot.

For months we worked hard to see as many of you as we could. If I was unable to see you please know it wasn't because I didn't want to, time would simply not allow me to go everywhere and see everyone. My family worked tirelessly in this campaign and I will never forget their unselfishness or labor of love for me.

Congratulations to Chris Girdler, who will serve as our next State Senator. I wish you the best and trust that you will serve the 15th District with compassion and care. I also congratulate my friend, A.C. Donahue who ran a passionate campaign.

I have been heartened and saddened by this campaign, heartened that so many gave so much and worked so hard for each of the candidates in whom they believed; saddened that so few avail themselves of the opportunity, no responsibility, to take part in the process of electing our leaders. But as Winston Churchill said, "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried."

Best Wishes,

- Mark F. Polston

Maury Lewis sends expanded mule talk terminology guide

Culture and Enlightenment on Mules

By Maury Lewis

Here we go on Mule knowledge:
A Jack is a male donkey. A Jenny is a female donkey.
Jack + Mare = Mule
Jenny+ Stalliion = Hinney
Mules and hinneys are usually sterile but when a hinney can produce she is called a Molly Mule.
A lot of people call all female mules molly mules and I guess my husband is in that group.

Sounding off on a subject I know very little about, but thank God for the internet. - Maury Lewis
