Ref : Wonders about spelling of Grear/Greer in North Carolina people

By History Cousin: JIM

Ms. Harmon's query concerning the spelling(s) of her familial surname brought to mind this bit of humor penned back in the days when I did genealogical research for fun, profit, and the occasional complete nervous breakdown.

Junior's little girls are supposed to be called: Mollie Mules

Comments re photo 45411 Mother Horse with Junior StottsMaury Lewis writes:
I was telling my husband about them and he said in the mule world they are called Mollie Mules.- melewi /Maury Lewis
Thanks, Maury Lewis:: We need to be learning all we can about mules. Official Impresario Charles Grimsley brags that he is bringing a Mule Day or Mule Days to Columbia, KENTUCKY, and that he is doing serious research on the subject. We shall see whether this is just Big Talk or if we really have this going for us. Incidentally, not to bait the History Cousins, but we hope it does anyway, Merchant Street in Columbia was once called Jockey Street. I think. -EW

Mike Watson comments on: Wonders about spelling, Grear/Greer

Comments re article 52266 Wonders about spelling of GrearGreer in North Carolina people
To find names spelled variously in public or private records is not unusual at all. Many branches of families adopted the "accepted" way of spelling and actually changed their name.- MIKE WATSON

By Mike Watson

Today we are accustomed to regimented rules of spelling of surnames. Given names are another case, of course. By the post-Civil War era, circa 1865-1890, we in America began to take great effort to spell surnames in a standardized way. With the War, governmental paperwork increased many, many times, on every governmental level.

New list of birthdays up: June and July, 2012

By now, most people know that the birthdays in the database roll over each year until we are notified otherwise. Today is a great one to take a look at the birthdays for June and July, see who are on the list, who's not, whose listing needs to be changed (death or divorce, or any other reason) and whose listing needs a change (new married name, add a birthdate). Current two months' Birthdays, Anniversaries, and In Memory Birthdays

TODAY'S LIST of BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES & IN MEMORY BIRTHDAYS is impressive. Check it, as you can every day, on the Front Page of ColumbiaMagazine.com. Early in the morning is, of course, best: Corrections can be sent and changes made, but most of all, there's time to send flowers, invite to a meal, buy a gift, or just do what we do best: Remember their special day.

ONE LIST WE'RE CONCERNED WITH NOW: The Overlooked. The Ungifted. The Unsung Happy Birthday To. It's heartbreaking. Those special people born on the Fourth of July but not on the list. We'd like to have everyone with that day listed. But we know - and maybe the History Cousins can tell us why - the number of birthdays around the holidays always seems to be fewer. Can't think there's any vital statistic reason why: Just as those people born on Holidays tend to have their birthdays overshadowed. CM sees a White Horse to Ride: We'd like to end the Injustice to Those Born on Holidays - and recognize their unique status. -EWPS: You can do your part: Send Birthday's, In Memory Birthdays, and Anniversaries, NOW, using any Contact/Submit Button
