Sparksville, in water district terms, is almost half the county

2012-01-12 - 109 Grant Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Columbia Adair County Utilities District General Manager Lenny Stone had outspread arms across a wall map of Adair County to show those at the Thursday, January 12, 2012 meeting the wide area to be served by the 750,000 gallon composite water tower at Sparksville. The tower will be fed by a 12 inch line from the 1,000,000 gallon Blue Raider Bob tower at Holladay Place in Columbia, KY. "So many people think that we're running a 12" line just to serve the community of Sparksville," he said, "but the area is huge." Looking on are Water Board Members Robert Flowers, left, and Rudy Higginbotham.

What will take place of the Long John Silver's?

Comments re photo 43448 Long John Silvers coming downVonda Derman writes:
Just wondering: If Long John Silver's is going to be torn down, just what will take its place? --Vonda Derman
People in the neighborhood just say it will be a bank. There's no official word on it yet. It probably won't revert to the Petty House (or was it their pasture where the LJS is now). Trying to remember back to the 1950's, the neighborhood was almost another small town, with the big white Petty House, Reed Combests Gulf Station and Dodge/Plymouth Automobile Dealership, Bernice Arnold's A & W Root Beer & Hot Dog Stand, Donnie's, later Jim's Drive In, Jim Osborn's Auction House, the Methodist Circuit Parsonage, the Burris Boat Factory/later Twyman Stephen's Plumbing Building, the Curry Grocery which later became Brad Graham's Food Check Market, the Holland Harvey residence, and Mr. Hill's residence, just to name a few. Wonder if anyone has any photos from that era? -EW

JIM: A True Account of the Monster in Sublett's Pond

TAKE WARNING before Reading: Those who are fragile of psyche, delicate of constitution, or prone to swooning should refrain from reading about the Varmint of The Valley.

By JIM

There can be no question that the gripping saga which follows is (as old man Ferd Jenkins was wont to say) a true piece, and no doubt the Inner Circle of Varmintologists -- Messrs. W.K. Neat, R.R. Walker, and J.W. Grider -- would nod in solemn agreement. This appeared in the April 8, 1908 edition of the News in the "Cane Valley Department," a regular full-page feature of the News during the first few months of that year.

Mystery Solved

Last summer, Mr. J.W. Sublett had quite a thrilling experience with frogs.

Greg Burton: The Power of Nails

Rev. Burton visited the nails shop operated by a group of Vietnamese, many of whom take part in his church's English as a Second Language Ministry. After overcoming the constraints of his male ego, he requested a manicure, but he wasn't ready, he writes, for the next step. "She smiled at me and asked, 'Now I do your toes?'My masculinity meter did not have a setting for that request! I politely declined and she seemed disappointed. As I was about to leave, the Voice popped into my head again, so I obediently asked, "Could I get a pedicure?" It's a fascinating, timely article. Rev. Burton is well know to CM readers, as many remember this contribution to the Burton family history: Local History: Thomas Burton and Cobbs Plantation, VA He is a frequent visitor to Columbia, KY, coming here not only to monitor the behavior of Murrell Burton, but also to visit his many kinfolk in Adair County.
From Liveliketheson.com, Greg Burton's web log. This column seems a very fitting one for this area of Kentucky, where, in a similar fashion, Vietnamese newcomers are enriching our lives, and English as a Second Language is becoming more and more an important opportunity

By Greg Burton

Our English as a Second Language class had been bringing several Vietnamese people into our church to work on their language skills. Most of them came from some of the local nail salons. One of the men had already come to Christ and was baptized a few months ago. This particular Sunday I found that a married couple had come to Christ over Thanksgiving and wanted to be baptized. Their English was minimal.

George Rice remembers different Wood Hen - not a woodpecker

Before river bottoms were flooded for Green River Lake, the birds inhabited the bottom land. He hunted them and remembers they were quite tasty

George Rice writes:
Woodhen v/s what ever. The bird pictured does not look anything like the woodhens we used to see when living in the Holmes Bend boat dock area. As a boy we used to have many of those so called woodhens in those river bottoms now covered with water.I remember them as being much larger and believe it or not those big birds are eatable. I used to kill them and Mother would cook them and they were quite tasty. --George Rice
