I have just returned home from baking 200 cookies for the children to decorate at the Chambers Christmas Carnival at Holloway Wellness Center, 299 Williams Street, Columbia, KY, at Lindsey Wilson 1pm-4pmCT, on Saturday December 3, 2011. There will be inflatables, games, story time, and of course cookie decorating. The day would also not be complete without Santa Claus. I hope all the kids will come out and see me at the cookie booth. - DIANE ROSE

Hands Extended Thanksgiving 2011: Report and Album

2011's Community Thanksgiving exceeded all expectations. It was a perfect day, with as good a Thanksgiving meal of Turkey, Ham, Dressing, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Green Beans, and all the fixings. Attendance was high, and even the setting, the cafeteria in the Adair County Middle School with its rich heritage and history - it was the cafeteria so many Adair Countians remember in the first Adair County High School Building - was perfect. Those in attendance and participating went across the spectrum of social levels, wealth or lack of it, and means of earning a living or no means. It was a textbook example of The Adair County Way at work. -EW

The Race of Milltown Bridge

By: Jim

From: The Adair County News, Wednesday, July 4, 1900
In the year 1849 or '50, when a wooden bridge was completed over the creek at Milltown, this county, Mr. John W. Townsend, of Milltown, and Mr. Tobias Leftwich, of Green county, were the first to cross said bridge and after they had crossed the structure they ran a foot race, resulting as we are informed, in a draw for the honor. That bridge served its purpose and has long since crumbled and been borne to other parts by the rapid current that flowed beneath it. Now a new iron and steel structure is to be erected at the same place and in commemoration of its completion, Mr. Leftwich has challenged Mr. Townsend to again cross the bridge and run a foot race. Mr. Townsend has accepted the challenge and the race is a certainty, barring sickness and death.

Adair County's Own: The Hubba-Hubba Girl

Hal Roach writes:
Have you ever heard of Amy Mae Coomer -- one of Adair County's most famous daughters? According to Wikipedia, she was a burlesque legend of the forties, fifties, and sixties and was known as "the $50,000 Treasure Chest" and "The Hubba-Hubba Girl." She was also a contemporary/rival of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. Wiki even has a picture of her.

Maury Lewis still wants to know how KY ranks in child abuse

Maury E Lewis writes:
I don't think people understood what I was asking.

Is Kentucky the Number One state in the Nation for child abuse deaths? This is what I heard a reporter say on the news the other night and I could not find any thing on the internet for this statistic.

I did read over what that one person told me to read but I didn't find the answer in there.

It is bad enough to be number one in child abuse but to be number one in child abuse deaths is even worse. When I heard Kentucky was number one in the Nation for Lung Cancer it bothered me but this is worse than that. - MAURY E. LEWIS.

JIM Off the Cuff: A Christmas Tale from Old Columbia

There's proof that The Adair County Way has worked for at least a century in the response to a fire at Elder Z.T. and Mary Williams' residence on Burkesville Street; and, as usual in JIM segues, the good humor of the Sandusky family shows through in a little boy's response to the report of a fire: He had his Christmas priorities in Order - CM

By Jim

The cacophonous clang of the fire alarm bell rent asunder Columbia's sleepy silence just about dark one December evening a century ago and galvanized the citizenry to action. Almost immediately, the location of the blaze became known to most everyone in town: the home of Rev. Z.T. & Mary Williams, two of Columbia's most-loved inhabitants, a little ways out Burkesville Street. As always, the townspeople quickly responded to need, and "In a few minutes, several hundred persons were en route to the building."

The Dakota lawsuit: Links to Articles

ColumbiaMagazine.com has received several tips about the lawsuit Dakota Meyer has inititiated against a defense contractor. With a preface that we believe in Dakota Meyer 100%, and believe that his lawsuit actually enhances his image in a Wolfordesque manner - Adair County's Col. Frank Wolford wouldn't back down in any confrontation - we are posting the Wall Street Journal story link for easier access to it:
Decorated Marine Sues Contractor
For non Wall Street Journal Readers, the link will work until approximately December 5-6, 2011. For WSJ readers, it will work over a longer period - we're not sure it there' is any a time limit - in the paper's archives. -ED WAGGENER

The Columbia Rotary Club will hold its annual all you can eat sausage, egg and biscuit breakfast this Saturday, December 3, 2011 as part of the Christmas in Columbia celebration. The Columbia Baptist Church, 201 Greensburg Street, in Downtown Columbia, KY will be the site of the breakfast, which will run from 6:30am until 10:30amCT. The Rotary club traditionally has kicked off Christmas in Columbia with its community-wide breakfast.
