Question: What happened to old courthouse bell? JIM poses Great Question of the Ages: In Mike Watson's History of Adair County (v 1 p 51), he notes that when plans were laid in to build a new courthouse in the 1880s, "C.J. and Uriah L. Taylor purchased the old courthouse for the sum of $180. This did not include the bell, chairs, stoves, tables, or the stone under the columns." I have to wonder if the old bell were installed in the new courthouse upon completion of that structure. We hit the peak of both the cottonwoods and aspen in both states. The color was unusually spectacular because both peaked at the same time. There are four photos accompanying.
