Robert Flowers: Tears from pride were in our eyes today

An Adair County leader relates feelings most of us had on this most unforgettable moment, a new high point in our 209 year history

By Robert FLowers

It is my prayer that years later patriotic Adair Countians can state where they were when they saw Dakota Meyer receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I was in the lobby of the Bank of Columbia with my fellow employees as we moaned and groaned about the delay of the ceremony.

Dakota Meyer story is proof enough that future in safe hands

'Thanks, Dakota, for bringing to life one of greatest scriptures ever penned' -BILLY JOE FUDGE

By Billy Joe Fudge

As for me, the amazing Dakota Meyer story has quieted any misgivings I might have had about "the" younger generation.

Actually, I am pumped. I really can't remember if I've ever been any more excited about the future.

Dakota's story, for most, should move this recession out of the mountain and into the molehill category.

Thanks Dakota for bringing to life in front of the world one of the greatest scriptures ever penned, "Greater love has no one than this; that he lay down his life for his friends." -BILLY JOE FUDGE

Dakota, thanks for taking my call . . .

'As the citation was read, Sgt. Meyer continued to stare straight ahead, his stillness repelling the adulation he still does not think he deserves. Of course, we know a very different truth.' -NATASHA ROSENSTOCK (NADEL)

WASHINGTON, DC - No government waste at this ceremony! The audience, filled with black dress uniforms, seemingly bereft of room for one more pin or medal, hung on each word, moment and movement as President Barack Obama told the story of Dakota Meyer's heroic actions.

Text of Medal of Honor Presentation to Dakota Meyer

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
AWARDING THE MEDAL OF HONOR
TO SERGEANT DAKOTA MEYER
East Room

2:50 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you, everybody. Please be seated. Thank you, Chaplain Kibben. Good afternoon, everyone. And on behalf of Michelle and myself, welcome to the White House.

It's been said that "where there is a brave man, in the thickest of the fight, there is the post of honor." Today, we pay tribute to an American who placed himself in the thick of the fight -- again and again and again. In so doing, he has earned our nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor. And we are extraordinarily proud of Sergeant Dakota Meyer. (Applause.)
