Twin City Drive-In, Horse Cave, Kentucky

Twin City Drive-In once stood as testament to free speech and the right of all not to go see moves which would offend

By Tom Chaney

The Drive In was built and operated by Kenneth Bale [Bale Oil, Bale Tobacco, South Central Bank]. They often had live shows atop the concessions stand. I don't remember the admission price. There was lots of sneaking in from the fields in back.

At some point Kenneth Bale sold it, but I spect television contributed to its slow decline and demise.

Flatwoods horseback rider says some ATVers leave trash behind

Trails could be closed to everyone because of misbehavior of a few, she says

Peg Schaeffer writes:
I live in the Flatwoods area and go horseback riding on the same trails the ATV riders use. I haven't had any problems with the drivers I meet on the trails. I stand my horse on the side of the trail and they drive quietly by. (My biggest problem is small children riding without helmets.) But I do have a problem with the trash they leave behind. The trails are beautiful and then there's an empty can they've tossed. If they had a recepticle that they carry their food and beverages in why can't the put the empties and trash back in it and discard it at home. If you don't respect the property owners these trails will be closed to everyone. - Peg Schaeffer

Recommends learning hands-only CPR

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

There's a good item in the Courier-Journal on page 1, section D this morning about the new hands only CPR technique. Among other things it lists an interactive video at Hands Only CPR and additional information at Hands only CPR FAQs. For those interested there are several local sources that offer CPR training including the LWC Health and Wellness Center which conducts CPR training frequently. Contact them at (270) 384-7380. It would be a safer, happier world for all of us if more people learned this simple, life-saving technique.

Lisa Lee comments on Cooper Ridge Road project

Personal commentary from Lisa Lee

As Judge Melton's Administrative Assistant, I would like to reply to Richard Lee Walker's statement about Judge Melton only wanting to do the Cooper Ridge Rd project because Gordon Brown, whom I am proud to call my father, lives on the road.

My father has lived on the 3 mile road for 30 plus years and never once, to my knowledge, has asked for any repairs to be done on the road or asked for blacktop on the road.

If we were going to ask for help, do you not think I would have done so before now, since I have worked for the county for several years, and the need for repairs on the road have not just happened overnight, the need has been there for years?

Instead it was Mr. Travis Giles (Scott Hill Road) who came in to see Judge Melton asking for help on getting Cooper Ridge Road widened because of the road being so narrow and dangerous, especially since so many families lived on the road, and numerous other people including Mr. Giles himself used the road.

Cooper Ridge is a connector road between Casey and Adair County and several people use the road for a short cut. Mr. Giles oversaw the task of getting right-ways signed from the residents of Cooper Ridge.

My father, daughter, grandchildren, relatives, and many friends live on this road, and I was relieved and excited when Mr. Giles and Judge Melton started the project of to make Cooper Ridge Rd a safer road to travel.

I never ask for the road myself to be fixed, because I work in the Judge's Office I fully am aware of numerous tax paying residents in Adair County that live on roads that are in bad need of repair, but with limited funds the county is unable to do these repairs and I never felt my family deserved any special treatment over any other taxing paying person in the county.

That is why money from the state is so crucial to Adair County.

I would like to invite Mr. Walker to take a trip on Cooper Ridge and he would understand the need of repairs for this road, but I would advise him not to travel Cooper Ridge if he has any back troubles or to do so at a reduced rate of speed. Cooper Ridge Rd and Toria Rd are both roads in remote areas of the county that extremely need repairs; people living in remote areas of the county also have the need for safe roads to travel.

Any money coming from State should be used on roads that have the greatest need of repair no matter if there are Democrats, Republicans, or somebody's family member living on that road. Lisa Lee

Two citizen action movements dominated the theatre for Monday, August 1, 2011.

JIM: New Adair Hotel went by many names in 79 year history

Whatever the badge, whatever day in its history, it was always first class. The kind of place which would, of itself, become a destination; which would have have Canadian tour busses backed up from Burkesviile Street, Columbia, KY to British Columbia, Jim says, taking a 'Waggenerian flight from reality' -EW

By "Jim"

During the course of its 79 years of existence, the New Adair went by many names. It opened in late November, 1898 as the Conover Hotel, Mr. John N. Conover, the owner, having contracted with Messrs. Davis & Moss of Glasgow to do the work. In the spring of 1898 the News commented that "The exact sum Mr. Conover is to pay has not been made public, but it is said to be six thousand dollars."

TECH: Should hotspots around Adair catalogued, be in a Directory?

With a digression about Zombie payments

David Simpson of Cafe Columbia, has suggested that public Wi-Fi Hotspots around the county be catalogued and available in a directory.

ColumbiaMagazine.com is relatively up to date this morning because of that availability in downtown Columbia; cable internet was down in the early hours of this Thursay morning, August 4, 2011, but thanks to a public internet connect, we were able to do several dozen updates to the site in the middle of the night before checking at 3amCT, when the cable service was working again.

Can't remember who, but someone has suggested that the city, county, Lindsey Wilson College or a utility blanket the Downtown with public Wi-Fi.

Others wonder why the whole of Adair County couldn't be virtually covered with Wi-Fi hotspots. One thing which hasn't worked for us: An AT&T Personal Hotspot. We've found it virtually useless in Adair County, and never worth the money - $40 a month or so - paid for it. Right now, it's one of those Zombie purchases we're paying for but haven't taken the time get AT&T to cut it off - never a simple task.

Along that line, it might be well to proclaim a countywide Zombie account day, when everyone examined those subconsious drains of bank account, those automatic bank withdrawals and credit card charges continuing and no longer needed. We've seen times when the annualized savings were $2400 per year or more. The payment for the useless-to-us AT&T hotspot certainly now falls into - after three months - a Zombie payment - though it's only $480 per year flushed down the drain. - EW

Ray Bardin questions submission to CM on waterway rights

Questions whether waterways can be fenced for livestock or not

Ray Bardin writes:
I'm confused. Your submission states if it floats then its a public right of way but if it touches ground it is trespassing. Are you sure that is an accurate statement? You also state it is legal to fence a creek in order to water livestock, but aren't you then fencing a public right of way? At least if I'm floating, right? -Ray Bardin

Flatwoods property owners being pro-active on ATV riding

Writer requests ATV riders who are respectful of others to mention the issues local residents are having to others
Comments re article 46010 Writer says theres statute with heavy penalties for trespassing with an ATV

April Shepperd/personal commentary to ColumbiaMagazine.com

We are very close to Flatwoods and are apparently sharing in your ATV issues. While most of the riders are respectful, there are some whose indifference for the property of others has made it difficult. It seems that "No Trespassing" signs carry no weight with some of these riders. Not only do they ride on the posted property of others, they are stealing and vandalizing.
