CJE Ann Melton, former Judge Walker at odds over road projects

She wanted State Money to go for Cooper Ridge and Toria Roads project. Former Judge Walker, State Commissioner of Highways Don Paisley and the District Chief Engineer chose Country Club development streets and two rural roads Judge agrees was a priority plus one rural road, which she says was not needed or should have been a low priority. She questions why Adair County was one of three counties (which she knows of; there may be others) where county government did not have a say; why a political shot caller/contact person made the decision in the first place.

By Ed Waggener

Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton and former Adair County Judge Executive and Governor Steve Beshear's political contact man Richard Lee Walker are at odds over the the use of State Discretionary Road Funds in the the current year.

Judge Melton says that Adair County is one of three Kentucky Counties she knows about, where the funds were spent at the political contact man's discretion. The other two, she said, were Cumberland County and Pike County. Cumberland County is the home of the Governor's November political opponent, Senate President David L. Williams.

Patty Rowe Nall: Lots of great memories of Hotel Miller

Patty Rowe Nall writes:
Morris Hoover, Thank you so much for sending in the photo of the Miller Hotel. I lived there with the owners, my grandparents Owen Icy Rowe. You know me as Patty Rowe. I grew up there and later worked in the Coffee Shop. At that time my aunt Ceola ran the restaurant. I have good memories at the hotel. I remember you worked as dispatcher for the Taxi Cab Co. run by the late Vanis Coomer. Then there was the Margie Ann Beauty Shop in the back, which was operated by the late Glenna Williams and Evelyn Ray. Lots of great memories! --Patty Rowe Nall

Got all the town news + haircut at Hotel Barber Shop

Richard Draper writes:
I used to get my hair cut at this barber shop when I was growing up. I would walk to town from school every other Friday to get a burr hair cut.I would wait in the shop until my Dad could pick me up. I got to hear all the town news while waiting for Dad.

I did this until I started to high school in 1963.

I always tried to get in Johnnie's chair because he always gave me a nickle to spend afterwards.

Johnnie was Gilliam's brother and part owner of the shop. -Richard Draper

ATV owner has had a confrontation with group of ATV riders

Donna Rieder writes:
When I moved here three years ago, I had problems with ATV riders using my creek as a passageway, and actually had a "confrontation" with a group of riders at one point. They don't come here anymore. ;) I'm not against ATVs; I own one myself. FYI: If the vehicle (ATV, boat, etc) in/on which a person or persons is riding floats, then that waterway becomes a public right-of-way. If the vehicle touches ground beneath the water (either in the middle or on the sides of the waterway), then that person is trespassing. Also, landowners have a legal right to fence into or across a waterway in order to water their livestock. Tampering with livestock valued over $500 is a felony, therefore, anyone compromising the integrity of that fence would also be committing a crime. - Donna Rieder
