Dr. David Hedrick, CU professor, in Stephen Foster Story

2011-07-19 - Bardstown, KY - Photo Photo from The Stephen Foster Story.
Dr. David Hedrick, fourth from left, assistant professor of music at Campbellsville University, is serving his 39th season in "The Stephen Foster Story" in Bardstown. In addition to being the musical director and music arranger for the show, he plays the role of Stephen Foster's father. In this particular scene, they are arguing about a songwriter making a living writing music. For most of the performance they are estranged and finally reconcile in the scene where "Old Folks at Home" is performed. Others in the picture from left are a lawyer (Stephen's rival for Jeanie), the maid Lievy, Mrs. Foster, Stephen, and Dunning (Stephen's brother). (Photo courtesy of "The Stephen Foster Story")

Rachel Lyons: Memories of Laundry Days

Seeing the old washing machine photo sure brought back lots of memories of washing clothes in her childhood in Southern Adair County, memories Rachel Lyons share in this great story of of many decades ago around Antioch
Written after reading Strange Things from South End of Adair Co., KY

By Rachel Lyons

One glimpse of that old washing machine and memories flooded her mind, flashing scenes, from years gone by. In a time before running water in the house, but after electricity, doing laundry was still an all day affair. On that Adair county farm, the adults were up between four and five am. A fire was started in the cookstove and, if it was wintertime, one was started in the living room stove, too. Then the older children are awakened to help with the chores. It is a day of lingering sights, sounds and smells.

Stick Harmon was a great God-fearing man

Jason Keith writes:
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of "Stick." He was a wonderful man, and I have many fond memories of him. From him assisting me with ringing the church bell on Sunday mornings when I was too short to reach it, to riding in his convertible after church. The memories are many as, his daughter Debbie, my sister, and I spent almost every Sunday together. He was a great God-fearing man, and will be missed by many. I know that he is in the "home" he spoke of almost every Sunday, and will be looking down on upon us all. May God provide peace to his family in this time.

Blessed are the dead, which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.(Revelation 14:13)

Kids Need Kicks provides new shoes, puts smiles on kids faces

CM Note: School starts in just 16 days. Kids Need Kicks (KNK), a very special drive founded by Cricket McCloud, finds new shoes for kids who otherwise wouldn't have them. Because of the economic times, the need is great this year. Really good new shoes can be purchased for $15-20 a pair, and Nikes, which really light up a kid's face, can be purchased for slightly more. Everyone can help now. The need is now. And it's easy: 1) Just buy NEW pairs of Shoes and take them by the Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY, from 8am-12pmCT, Monday-Friday, or 2) Write out a check payable to "The Family Resource Center" or take cash to the Family Resource Center, 316 Gen. John Adair DR, Columbia, KY. $100 will buy up to six pairs of shoes. Every dollar contributed will be used to buy shoes for Adair County School children who otherwise wouldn't have - may never have had - the pride that only new shoes can give. It's the Adair County Way. Please act today. -Ed Waggener

By Cricket McCloud
News from Kids Need Kicks (KNK)

Many children don't have athletic shoes. While they may have sandals or flip flops, many simply don't have athletic shoes, especially new ones.

Additional athletic shoes are also needed. When the students come to pick up assigned athletic shoes, they are fitted with the pair and often they don't fit properly. With an additional variety of shoes to choose from, another size or style of shoe is then chosen for the student to try on.

V. Kolbenschlag: Morgan did not burn Green River Bridge

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Here's just a quick note on the Green River Bridge that is being replaced. I knew from reading about the Tebb's Bend encounter with John Hunt Morgan on his longest raid, that the wooden bridge at that time, July 1863, was not burned.

Morgan and his raiders had burned the previous wooden bridge during his so called Christmas Raid in 1862. In Campbellsville there is a large mural showing Morgan heading south toward Columbia. There is snow on the ground indicating winter. He was returning from burning many bridges and disrupting supply lines further north and burned the bridge over Green River at that time.
