Old Coddger: Signs show us the way

Response to Writer says travellers ought to know where KY 80 is - without signage

Old Coddger writes
In response to the comment by an unknown author, to my remark about the need for a sign at the corner of the Square and Jamestown Street showing that was also KY 80 E along with being KY 55 S. It has been my experience that if there is signage directing me into an intersection (Public Square) there will be sinage directing me out of that intersection, even if it is straight thru.

There are signs onto the Square if you are coming in from 80 W, and the only other direction is on the Greensburg St side of the "Old Courthouse" lawn, pointing you around the Square, not which street to take off the Square. If we stop and think a moment, to even see this sign, if you come into town from 80 W, you have to do almost a full circle of the Squre to see it, when all you had to do was take the next street off the Square, if there was a sign there to direct you.

Very simply if there are road signs showing us to any point, and the road continues on, then there should be signs to show us that also. -Old Coddger

Lake Cumberland more beautiful than Big Sur, CA

Von Price writes:
What a beautiful picture of Lake Cumberland. I remember going down to the Dam with my parents on a Sunday afternoon, I guess back then that would be, by today's standards, a Sunday afternoon drive; and then we would go down to Swan Pond Bottom to the McClure Farm and buy watermelons.

My father used to talk about how bottom land was the most fertile. I was always so scared to look over the edge of the dam, maybe that is why I am so afraid of heights today. It just seemed so massive when I was a child.

I have been in every State and there is no other place as beautiful as the sight of Lake Cumberland. The Big Sur in California is beautiful, but Lake Cumberland beats it! -Von Price

Guest editorial: Calming Downtown Traffic

There's a resurgence in Downtown Commerce. Let's don't let it die off for lack of attention to the biggest basic problem: Safety of Pedestrians. Amen, to the following guest editorial. -EW

By Billy Joe Fudge
Guest commentator

I am so excited about the increased commercial and social activity, Downtown. To actually see folks meeting, eating, and congregating Downtown brings joy to my heart.

Now it appears that activity is going to increase even more with Danny Reeves moving and expanding his business into the "old Firestone" building. Additionally, it seems that Ben Arnold is again making a sizeable investment in the Downtown economy and social scene with the remodeling of the Columbian Theatre and, by all appearances, the reopening of that historic venue.

After having a Downtown almost devoid of commercial and social activity, especially after the 9 to 5 business day for several decades, I am sure that we are all ready to make a commitment to do our part toward making sure that there is an atmosphere conducive to continued growth and expansion.

I want to encourage all our elected officials and all citizens in positions of authority or responsibility to make every effort to get the speed limit on the Square and a two block radius on all streets entering and exiting the Square lowered to 15 mph. At present it is either 35 or 25 depending upon which street speed limit signs you choose to go by.

Of course at this present time, enforcement of current speed limits and attention to drivers who are being reckless and irresponsible are key to creating a safe, comfortable, and palatable atmosphere in our Downtown.

Let us not wait for another accident causing injury or death to get serious about lowering the speed limits and enforcement of those limits to calm down the flow of traffic in our Downtown.

Writer says travellers ought to know where KY 80 is - without signage

KY 80 SIGN writes:Why put a sign up for this should we also put up a sign for all other roads in the county. I have never seen a sign directing someone toward a road such as this. If someone is lost maybe they should buy a road map as we can't afford to put up a sign directing us to all roads, that is why they make road maps If someone is going to KY 80 they should know to follow KY 55 until they intersect the road. -KY 80 SIGN Comments above re photo 40245 Need a to East 80 sign on Public Square at Jamestown ST
