The whole LWC/Louisville Symphony was wonderful

Doug and Marcy McCammish writes:

We agree! The performance was magnificent! Like George, we always enjoy pieces of Handel's "Messiah" and the whole concert was wonderful. Those who missed it also missed some of Lindsey's and Adair County's finest young people showing their talent and hard work. Of course we're biased toward our neighbor Christian Talley and anything Dr. Chafin organizes. Doug and MarcyComments re article 44089: LWC Choir/Louisville Symphony Strings concert magnificent

LWC Choir/Louisville Symphony Strings concert magnificent

Here's a piece on last night's LWC concert. It was so good it brought me off the couch and out of retirement to write this. Of course, listening to any part of Handel's Messiah--especially when done so well--is emotional and inspiring. And, I can't listen to such a beautiful rendition of Ungar's Ashokan Farewell without envisioning those Civil War boys sloshing through the blood and refuse infested landscape just wishing they could be home. I was glad to be there, but I'm sorry so many people missed the opportunity.

By George Kolbenschlag

Last night's LWC/Louisville Symphony Strings concert at the Columbia Christian Church was magnificent. The combination of the college's fine concert choir, individual soloists (both voice and instrumental), the representatives of the Louisville Symphony Strings and Lindsey Wilson music professor Bob Reynolds at the piano was wonderfully conceived and directed by Lindsey Wilson's Gerald Chafin, associate professor of music and choral director.

For Bob Barnes: Not just a random act of kindness

Shamarie Claiborne writes:
For anyone who doesn't know Bob Barnes this act of kindness is not random.

Bob helps people every day. He donates his time, efforts, and abilities to those he knows as well as to those he doesn't. He is a genuine GOOD GUY!

I am blessed and proud to know him and call him my friend. He is also one of the most humble people I know. I have spent most of the weekend around him and his family and still didn't know he was taking on this trip.

With Bob there is no - here I am - look at me.... I pray for him to have productive days and that God will bring him home safely back to those who love him. -Shamarie Claiborne

We're only too happy to do our part. Everyone we talk to in Columbia is so proud of having such as delightful community so nearby to visit. We hear from some here who say they like Greensburg better than Colonial Williamsburg. With gas prices so high, it's wonderful to have a holiday just 17 miles away. -EW

In regards to Mr Barnes moving his relief effort from Walmart parking lot

About: Bob Barnes truck moved to street near Five Star

Tiffany Kessler writes:
I understand the staff of Walmart are just doing their jobs, but shame on the company for having such an idiotic policy. Considering the southern region of the US is their most profitable market, they should be happy to assist in the relief effort and grant an emergency exception. Has common sense and decency just completely gone out the window? Sam Walton is turning over in his grave.-Tiffany Kessler
Thanks for you comment. I would agree with the need for Walmart to allow local judgment, common sense to take over in a situation such as this one, but the underlying premise of the company rule is, we'd concede, a good one: To make sure that charities soliciting on company property are legitimate ones. On the other hand, those of us who know Bob Barnes and believe in him, and who contributed to his effort wish that more local autonomy were allowed at local Walmarts, autonomy which would have allowed an exception to have been made in this case. And we would point out that Mr. Barnes holds no animosity toward the company and that the local officials were apologetic about the situation. -ED

Bob Barnes truck moved to street near Five Star

Barnes says he understands: Local Walmart store officials were simply following rules which prevented his tornado relief effort from being set up on company property. He's moved it to a street near Five Star. Contributions are pouring in. But one donor, who had $2,000 for purchases in the Walmart store, leaves in tears.

By Ed Waggener
(Monday, May 2, 2011: 06:33:00) - The Bob Barnes tornado relief effort truck has been moved to the drive by Five Star in Holladay Place after Columbia Walmart managers on duty told him of company rules which do not allow private efforts such his to be on company property without prior approval.

The on duty manager was apologetic, but said that company rules had to be followed. He expressed support, otherwise, for Bob Barnes' work.

Barnes has moved the truck, and said he fully understands. In his rush to help in the emergency in Alabama, he said, he had failed to ask permission. He'll be on his way to Alabama with a backhoe and other equipment at around 8amCT.
