Epicurean Kentuckian: Watermelon like they sell in Russell Co.

2016-08-08 - The Fruit Market, 2400 S Hwy 127, Russell Springs, KY 42642 - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). One might first guess this watermelon came from Swan Pond Bottom, the section below Wolf Creek Dam which used to be the watermelon capitol of Kentucky. But Joe Branscum, proprietor of The Fruit Market, said that this one is a bit brought on - it was grown in Allen County, KY. At 100 pounds, it will provide watermelon for a mighty big family reunion. The fame which prompted a very excity visit was word spread by a trusted foodie, who pines from the fabulous sandwiches and by-the-pound salad bar at the Fruit Market. It was past closing time when this photo was made, but a sandwich was cut to order. It was up there with the best. Will seek further advice from this tipster. And, while we can't vouch for the quality of the watermelon, only it's looks, we can vouch for a big cantaloupe from The Fruit Market: It was a good as cantaloupe could be. - EW
