Scenic Adair Co., KY: Crepe Myrtle & Sonic

2012-07-27 - Jamestown & Tutt Streets area, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Late July and August is Crepe (or Crape) Myrtle time in Columbia, KY. The one on the right in the photo is the heritage symbol of the beautiful shrub's popularity in Columbia. It's Tutt Street, and has been a bellwether for crepe myrtle fanciers for decades, possibly begun in the Roscoe Antle era for the home. The view is from Wendy's, past Golden Rule-Wilson, over Tutt Street, to the Sonic drive-in restaurant, whose colors and geometry complement the season. Other much watched crepe myrtles are at the Eubank home on Jamestown Street, and one we like, on Fortune Street by Windstream telephone exchange building. It's a living monument to a wonderful neighbor and a beloved Adair County teacher, Nell Tarter Rogers.
