SCENIC ADAIR COUNTY, Horse Country: Belgian Work Mare at Knifley, KY

2006-03-22 - Eastridge Livestock Farm, Knifley, Northern Adair CO., KY - Photo Ed Waggener. Wayne Eastridge's Belgian work stock mare is one of the largest of her type. "She was a little over 18 hands tall when I measured her earlier," he said, "and she's grown." The mare is bred to produce big mules, and she has a mule colt with her now. Big as she is, another of Eastridge's Belgian mare sis bigger: She measures 18 1/2 hands. Both are big for the breed, which generally measures 15-16 hands, he said. The Eastridge Livestock Farm, owned by Eastridge and his wife, Mildred, is located just east of Knifley on Eastridge Cemetery Road; it has a Casey Creek mail address. Farm tours are no longer done, but Eastridge welcomes folks to drive by and see the exotic animals, from emus to buffalo, which populate the farm the Eastridges so meticulously maintain. No story.
