Just a matter of time

2026-10-08 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
I took a break from squinting at fast-moving migratory warblers to photograph something on a slower scale, glowing on a tree trunk in the fall sunshine. I reached out to retired Forest Ranger and Columbia Magazine Senior Tree Expert Billy Joe Fudge for more information, and he even recognized the type of tree just from the bark.

Billy Joe writes, "Looks like Black (Wild) cherry resin. Hold onto it for a million years or so and it will become valuable amber. Other trees do it, particularly pines, but appears to be cherry."
