Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, completed in 1975, was established to mitigate for habitat changes that resulted from the construction of many federal dams throughout the Southeast. Native populations of warm water fishes such as bluegill, smallmouth bass, and catfish, used to thrive in these streams. After construction of the dams, the habitat was changed to a cold water fishery. The Russell County hatchery raises over 1,000,000 brook trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and rainbow trout each year, which thrive in cold water.
