Kentucky Color: Dog Bee

2025-08-03 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge
Billy Joe writes, "We Great Wooded South Baby Boomers have had several different names for these gentle, summertime insects. 'Dog Bee' was the one I grew up calling them. They are, in reality, a Hover Fly. There are thousands of varieties scattered around the world. I believe this to be the North American Hover Fly.

I have spent hour upon hour letting them land on my arms and hands. There are not many insects with which one can safely interact let alone pet. Yes, pet! This particular one hung around me about fifteen minutes and hitched a ride on my finger several times. However, it seemed to be a little camera shy while standing on my fingertip."
