Twelve Kentucky sites are being considered for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, including The H.M. Smith General Merchandise and Fonthill Post Office in Russell County. The H.M. Smith General Merchandise and Fonthill Post Office serves as an illustration of a rural country store with an attached post office dating back to the early 20th century. It symbolizes the influence these establishments had on both the commercial and social aspects of rural agricultural communities in Russell County from 1914 to 1973. Travel: Along North Umpqua Scenic Highway, 2 of 2

Robert writes, "With the Falls behind us, and continuing on towards the Oregon coast, we stopped along this river drive to take some more pics. We were fortunate to be at the right place, at the right time as the Sun was starting to blaze through the fog and light rain, revealing these beautiful rock formations."

Some of the Cooks at the Circle R

A scrapbook display from the Harper Family includes photos of Mrs. Dowell, Mrs. Doris Johnson, and another cook at the Circle R Restaurant. You can see the display now at the Trabue Russell House. It provides a unique look back at a Columbia institution, still missed by many. Mrs. Johnson's son, Robert, says, "My mother worked at the restaurant for many years as a cook, and I would like to think that she played a small role in the near legendary status of the great food and service that could be enjoyed at the Circle R."
