Great Blue Heron in action

2020-01-18 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com
A Heron has an interesting walk. When he straightens up to his three-to-five feet height, his neck makes a lovely S form. As he takes a step, his neck stretches out long. As he spots food, his head would snap downward to the little creek, and then he would rise again.

Morning hunter visited Columbia's Town Creek

2020-01-18 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com
A Great Blue Heron swept to the little Town Creek that flows through the yard in Columbia, landed and marched to the pool that forms around the root formations under the ancient Catalpa tree. He posed, quiet and still for a moment, as he scanned the pool. Then he began a slow walk up the creek toward John and Missy Arnold's fence, gazing all around as he stepped ever so lightly through the water.

Former department store abandoned, action pending

2020-01-18 - Corner of Jamestown Street and Public Square, Columbia, KY
This historic building on the Public Square in Columbia has been the subject of speculation for several years since it has been abandoned and allowed to deteriorate. Once the deterioration becomes a hazard to those around it, actions are forced. The City of Columbia, after a year of requests for the owners to respond, has placed caution tape around its exterior to alert pedestrians after more windows fell out in the storm of last Saturday, and further steps are beginning. In this keepsake photo from the early 1900s, the building appears to have been a grand seat of retail and service businesses.
