Scenic Cumberland County, KY - purple fields

2020-03-16 - Cumberland County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com
The countryside is turning from shades of brown of winter to gentle colors of spring. This delightful little plant has turned fields purple, or lavender, in Cumberland County. According to Billy Joe Fudge, "if the stem of this plant has leaves all the way to the ground it is Purple Dead-Nettle. If the stem is bare of leaves up to 2 or 3 inches from the ground up, it is Henbit." I didn't get up close to examine it because it was private property and there was no one around to ask for permission. As a matter of fact, the fields are for sale behind a beautiful home. More about that in the next photo.

Columbia United Methodist Church 15 Mar 2020

2020-03-15 - Columbia - Photo from Screen Shot
This is what the Columbia United Methodist Church service looked like with Ben and Julie Martin, leaders of the contemporary service, March 15, 2020. The services had been cancelled for the safety of church members during the efforts to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, so this event took place live on Facebook and plans are to repeat it while regular services are cancelled.

The hills of Cumberland County are still in winter phase for another week or two. Trees are budding out and they will be greening up soon. This view is from Hwy 61 where one can turn off onto scenic 704.
