A male hooded merganser, spotted paired up with a female in a pond along I-64. All About Birds says that hooded mergansers are year-round residents in Kentucky, and "in fall through spring, head to unfrozen lakes and look for them mixed in flocks with other small divers like Bufflehead and Ruddy Ducks." Harry Beard is pictured wearing the ski jacket he purchased in Europe in the late 1940s. The jacket features patches showing the various placed he skied, including Lillehammer, Norway, the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
