Seasonal jobs are happening in local blueberry fields just as in tobacco cutting days. The start of blueberry growing in Kentucky happened not far from this Breeding Road farm. The couple who started the dream came south from rugged Michigan winters (the blueberry capital of America). They said they were looking for land that would grow sage brush and cedar trees because the soil ph balance is what blueberries thrive in. This region, in the hills near the Adair - Metcalfe - Cumberland County lines, turned out to be just right. Comments | Permalink

Fresh, home grown blueberries are in. Since 2003 when Ed and I tasted our way through documenting this feature blueberry crop begins on Columbia Magazine, area farm families started asking, could blueberries replace tobacco as our cash crop? It appears to be happening for many. Comments | Permalink
