Yes, wasps drink water but that isn't the only reason you see them at your fountain, swimming pool, farm pond, bird bath, etc. in late spring and especially hot Summer weather.
Wasps mix water with wood pulp to make their nests. As far as I know they were the first paper manufacturers! Of course, Dirt Daubers are wasps that build nests from mud. Additionally, they use water to cool the temperatures in their nests and maybe even to maintain humidity levels for their larvae in the nest.
Usually, wasps out gathering water are pretty fairly focused on the task at hand and pose very little threat to us, human types. Comments | Permalink Older Photos
