Birds of Kentucky: Black-crowned Night-Heron

2022-06-24 - Bay City, MI - Photo by Pen
This specimen was a bit farther north, but Black-crownd night-herons are plentiful in Kentucky. All About Birds says, "Black-crowned Night-Herons are common in wetlands across North America--you just may have to look a little harder than you do for most herons. True to their name, these birds do most of their feeding at night and spend much of the day hunched among leaves and branches at the water's edge."

This picture hangs in the conference room of the Adair County Genealogy and History Center. The name of the little boy is not known but the photo shows a view of the Public Square that includes the exit to Burkesville Street between what is today Red Brick Studio and Bank of Columbia. Across the Square was Nell's Variety Store and First National Bank.
