Robert Stone: A sonnet about 'Independence' without the word

When we can choose
a sonnet about independence without the word
When our activities are not for all
and we enjoy without a second thought,
we notice not our view is much too small
and we depend on what we have not bought.

When our decisions others’ needs ignore
and we believe their choices would be poor,
we feel perhaps but gently power soar
and we grow deafer to each cri de coeur.

When our desires are ever closer by
and we extend our care but to our own,
we steel our hearts and steal the living sigh
and we become the blinded overthrown.
When we can choose to do or not to do
but choose more often not, we further coup.
~ Robert Stone, 8 July 2018 (written for Poetry in the Boro’s July challenge to write a poem about independence without using the word)
