Billy Joe Fudge: Crosswalks a beginning, much more needed

A call to replace Yield Signs with Stop Signs: 'Vehicle-after-vehicle at Burkesville Street Crossing, ignore crossing, when young teen with 5-6 year old, apparently needing to cross from Red Brick to Bank of Columbia corner. . . finally, a vehicle stopped in the right lane opening the crosswalk for them to cross. The little girl grasped the hand of the little boy and ran full speed across the gauntlet otherwise known as Burkesville Street . . . It is just a matter of time until another disaster will once again grab the headlines.' - BILLY JOE FUDGE

I see that the construction crew needs a stop sign instead of a yield sign to provide for the safety of their employees.

It would be nice if the "powers that be" would have the same consideration for our citizenry who use or would like to use the cross walks Downtown.

I saw what appeared to be a 13 or 14 year old young lady holding the hand of a 5 or 6 year old little boy standing at the Burkesville Street crosswalk recently.

It was apparent that they wanted to cross to the Red Brick Studio corner of the Square. As I was approaching the Square, vehicle after vehicle exited and entered the Square with no apparent concern or respect for these two young pedestrians.

As I neared the crosswalk, a vehicle exiting the Square stopped, then I stopped in the left lane entering the Square while two additional vehicles raced across the crosswalk entering the Square from the right lane.

Finally, a vehicle stopped in the right lane opening the crosswalk for them to cross. The little girl grasped the hand of the little boy and ran full speed across the gauntlet otherwise known as Burkesville Street.

The traffic safety situation on our Downtown Square is becoming more frenzied day by day.

It is just a matter of time until another disaster will once again grab the headlines.

It is just a matter of time until TV stations will be filming on the Square interviewing local officials and citizens about the pedestrian injuries and or, God forbid, deaths.

It is now time for our Judge and Fiscal Court and for our Mayor and City Council to take the necessary steps to calm the traffic onto, around and off, our Downtown Square. --
