The Center for Rural Development recently elected board member Dr. W. Bruce Ayers as its new Chairman of its Board of Directors.

"It has been a distinct honor to serve on the Board of Directors for The Center for Rural Development and especially to now be chosen as Chair," Dr. Ayers said. "I look forward to working with President & CEO Lonnie Lawson and the board in the upcoming year. The work that The Center is doing in Southern and Eastern Kentucky through sustained community development is transforming our region, and I believe, bringing a new sense of hope to our people."

Dr. Ayers served as President of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College for almost 27 years. He worked at the college for more than 45 years until he retired in June 2013.

During his tenure, Dr. Ayers positioned the college among the nation's leaders in providing access to higher education including strong and responsive support networks to assist students in meeting their academic and personal goals. The college was frequently ranked in the top 10 percent of 2-year colleges across the country and also chosen in 2012 as one of the 10 best community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute.

"We are excited to have Bruce Ayers as our board chair," said Lonnie Lawson, President and CEO of The Center for Rural Development. "With his many years in higher education and his excellent service in Southern and Eastern KY, we know he will bring the same passion to The Center board."

Dr. Ayers is a member of various boards and committees. He is a managing partner of Star Education Programming, and holds membership on the SOAR Executive Board, the Central Appalachian Institute for Research and Development, and the Tri-City Chamber of Commerce. He is a founding member of the Rural Community College Alliance, which is a national organization made up of colleges that seek to promote economic vitality in rural America.

He and his wife Barbara recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary. They have two sons, Sean, 44, and Andy, 34; two daughters-in-law, Andrea and Sydney; and three grandchildren, Trinity, 12, Troy, 9, and Adyn, 4.
