LEWISTON, ID (Tue 31 May 2016) - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team saw their 2016 season finally come to an end on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to Bellevue (Neb.) in the Avista-NAIA World Series.

After slugging out 15 runs on 15 hits in an elimination-game victory yesterday against Auburn-Montgomery (AL), the Blue Raider (44-25) offense was never able to find a consistent rhythm at the plate against the third-seeded and No. 2-ranked Bruins (53-11). Lindsey Wilson managed just one run on five hits as they were unable to fight off elimination for the second day in a row.

The Blue Raiders put barrels to the ball, but Bellevue, who ranks No. 1 in the NAIA in fielding percentage, made clean defensive plays throughout the day as they recorded 13 total groundouts in the game.

It was a pitcher's duel for the majority of the contest as Tyler Russell and Bellevue's Braulio Torres-Perez put up zeroes in six of the nine innings. The first two frames went by scoreless until Bellevue opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a one-out double that landed just inside the left-field line, scoring a runner from second for the 1-0 lead.

The Bruins threatened to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth after the first two runners reached on singles, but Russell got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout.

Lindsey Wilson let a promising scoring chance slip away in the top of the fifth.

Jan Carlos Ortiz led off with a single and Brandon Munoz reached on an error on a fielder's choice to start the frame. Ortiz stole third and attempted to score on a bunt squeeze play, but the Bruins defense was ready and Ortiz was caught in a rundown for the first out. Victor Nazario then lined out to the shortstop, who then doubled off Munoz at second to end the inning.

Bellevue threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth with runners on second and third and two outs, but Russell escaped once again with a groundout.

Lindsey Wilson finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring with two outs. Caleb Ratzman legged out an infield hit, moving to second when Ashton was hit by a pitch. Austin Atwell then delivered a single to center, scoring the speedy Ratzman to tie the game at 1-1.

But Bellevue had an immediate response and retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Derik Bontempo led off with a single, and later moved to second with two outs following a groundout. Jake Browne then ripped a double to the right-field wall to score Bontempo and put the Bruins back out front 2-1.

Both sides were retired in the seventh and Lindsey Wilson went down again one-two-three in the top of the eighth. Torres-Perez continued to baffle the Blue Raiders as six players went a combined 0-for-17 against him on the day as he faced the minimum in four innings.

Bellevue added some insurance runs in bottom of the eighth, doubling their lead.

The leadoff hitter sent a routine ground ball to Russell on the mound, but Russell had a wild throw to first to allow the runner to move all the way around to third. Bontempo then hit a sacrifice fly to right to score the runner and take a 3-1 lead. Joe Mancuso followed with a solo home run to left field to make it 4-1, chasing Russell from the game. Russell went 7-1/3 innings with eight strikeouts, allowing three earned runs on nine hits without issuing a walk. Sam Ross closed out the final 2/3 innings without allowing a baserunner.

Lindsey Wilson was unable to put together any final rallies in the ninth as the Blue Raiders fell 4-1 to bring their season to a close.

Russell (7-3) took the loss while Torres-Perez earned the complete-game win, improving to 12-3 on the year.

Atwell provided the lone RBI on the day for the Blue Raiders. The loss brings Lindsey Wilson's overall World Series record to 2-4, including a 2-2 performance in 2016.

The Blue Raiders wrap up the season at 44-25, making the deepest postseason run in program history.
