LWC Softball falls to Campbellsville in MSC Tournament finals

By Charles Balcom

BOWLING GREEN, KY - (Sun 01 May 2016) The Lindsey Wilson softball team fell in the Mid-South Conference Tournament finals to Campbellsville (Ky.) by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Michael O. Buchanon Park.

The sixth-ranked Blue Raiders (44-12) were unable to come up with the big hit when they needed it most, stranding 11 runners in the 1-0 loss to the fourth-ranked Tigers (48-8) in the championship game.

Lindsey Wilson needed to beat Campbellsville twice in the title game after emerging as the consolation bracket winner with a 6-3 win over Cumberland (TN) earlier in the day.

The Phoenix (15-32) sent Lindsey Wilson down into the consolation bracket with a 10-5 victory over the Blue Raiders on Friday.

Just like in the loss on Friday night, the Blue Raiders fell in an early deficit to the Phoenix in the top of the first, taking advantage of Lindsey Wilson miscues in the process.

After the first two batters reached on a walk and a Lindsey Wilson fielding error, Kassydi Montgomery sent a one-out, full-count pitch just over the left-field fence to put the Phoenix up 3-0. Cumberland had a runner on third following another Blue Raider error, but a strikeout brought the inning to a close.

Lindsey Wilson cut into that lead in the bottom of the frame after Firestein led off with a slapped infield single, later stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch. Callum Pilgrim walked and Sydney Fourman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Bailey Mize. Mize hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Firestein to score and the runners to move to second and third. Amber Foukes then drew a walk to load the bases again, but a line out ended the inning and left all three runners stranded.

After a scoreless second, the Blue Raider offense took advantage of some free passes to tie the game up in the bottom of the third. Pilgrim walked and Fourman was hit by a pitch to bring up Mize. Mize delivered a double down the line to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3 with no outs, her second and third RBIs of the game. But the momentum stalled there as the next three batters all flew out to end the inning.

Lindsey Wilson finally took their first lead of the day with a three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Brittney Graves started things off with a single, followed by Firestein beating out another infield single. Cassie Kooker bunted the runners over and Pilgrim ripped a single to right field. Graves scored easily on the hit as Firestein caught the defense napping and swiped home as well to put the Blue Raiders up 5-3. Fourman chased home Pilgrim one batter later with a double off the fence to make it a 6-3 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson did not increase their lead from there, but the three-run cushion would be enough for starter Casey Bryan as she zeroed in following the opening inning.

Bryan (20-7) allowed just four more base runners for the remainder of the game after the first, facing no more than four batters in an inning for the final six frames. She allowed just four total hits in the complete-game victory, striking out six en route to becoming Lindsey Wilson's second 20-game winner this season. Mize finished with three RBIs in the game and Firestein and Pilgrim both scored twice in the victory.

Lindsey Wilson 0 - Campbellsville 1

The championship game was a pitcher's duel between the top-two pitchers in the conference in Campbellsville's Victoria Decker and Lindsey Wilson's Lyndsey Parden. The duo ranks in the top two in nearly every statistical pitching category in the MSC.

Both pitchers put forth complete-game efforts, but in the end the Tigers managed to push across the lone run in the game in the bottom of the fourth to help Decker pick up the win.

Lindsey Wilson came out swinging in the top of the first, putting runners on the corners with one out, but a strikeout and groundout put a quick end to the scoring chance.

Lindsey Wilson had another scoring opportunity to break the scoreless tie in the top of fourth. After a hit by pitch and a Tiger error, a sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third with one out. But the runners were unable to move any further after a groundout to the infield and a strikeout ended the scoring chance.

Campbellsville finally put an end to the scoreless game with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Brianna Scott led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt, and scored two batters later on a single by Markie Smith for the opening run of the game. Parden was able to exit the inning without any additional damage with a pair of strikeouts.

Lindsey Wilson had a chance to answer in the top of the fifth, but missed a huge opportunity to score after leaving the bases loaded. With runners on second and third and two outs, Fourman was intentionally walked to bring up Mize. Mize, who had been swinging a hot bat all tournament, was unable to find the clutch hit as she grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat, the third time in the game Lindsey Wilson has left runners stranded on third base.

The Blue Raiders again put runners on base in the top of the sixth, but just like before, Lindsey Wilson was unable to push those runs around the base paths as two more runners were left stranded in the inning.

Fourman gave the Blue Raiders a glimmer of hope with a two-out single in the top of the seventh, but a groundout brought the game to an end and secured the 1-0 championship win for the Tigers.

Parden (23-4) finished with 11 strikeouts while allowing five hits in the loss. The Blue Raider offense managed seven hits, but left 11 runners stranded and failed to take advantage of three Tiger errors. Lindsey Wilson had runners reach base in six of the seven innings.

Lindsey Wilson now awaits their NAIA Opening Round matchups. The Blue Raiders are one of 10 host sites around the NAIA on May 16-18.
