Columbia Police Department, Chief Jason Cross

Columbia Police Department has took a Columbia man into custody after standoff on East Frazier Street.

The incident occurred when CPD officers responded to a 911 call that a male subject had a gun to his head threatening suicide at a residence off Tutt Street. Upon officers arrival the subject fled into a wooded area toward East Fraizer.

Sgt. Murphy and Ofc Jamie Cole entered the woods in an attempt to locate him and made visual contact at one point, but he got deeper into the brush and visual was lost; however, they did see that he was packing a pistol.

At that point Chief Jason Cross activated an all call for all available officers to respond to the area which resulted in eight additional Columbia Officers within minutes.

A perimeter was established and Adair County Dispatch started notifying the daycares and schools of what was going on. The school initiated a soft lockdown.

Once adequate officers where on scene the search resumed and the male subject was located in a large drainage tile that runs under East Frazier that carries the city creek.

Once he was contained to that area negotiations began with officers.

CPD officer Josh Brockman entered into the creek and after approximately 20 minutes was able to get him to lower his gun from his head, but he still refused to surrender his weapon and talks continued.

He then agreed to let Ofc Brockman and Deputy Aaron Rainwater come into tile with him.

After approximately another 30 minutes they were able to get him to unload and surrender his firearm and himself to them and exited the tile without incident.

He was taken to Adanta for a Mental Health Evaluation where he was then sent to Eastern State Hospital for a 72 hour hold for a full mental health work up.

At this time Columbia Police will not be releasing the name of the individual.

Agencies that assisted and responded was Columbia Police Department, Adair County Sheriff Department, Kentucky State Police, KY Department of Fish and Wildlife Officers and Adair County EMS.
