Poetry by Robert Stone: Unexpected memories

Unexpected memories
~ a sonnet in memory of Clara Elizabeth Ellis on her birthday
The quiet sadness never disappears
though sting be more or less from day to day.
No longer living swim within our tears,
who living often lived too far away.

The stirring gladness ever comes in view
through unexpected memories evoked.
All unforgotten olds will be made new,
all worn and tattered brightly will be cloaked.

Things done and things not done fade in and out
throughout the seasons marking off our lives
and learning what to be content about
brings satisfaction soft with what survives.

So long as stories often are retold
the lives that formed us further will unfold.
~ Robert Stone, 11 February 2016
