By Ed Waggener

When the Walnut Grove Bridge over Burns Creek was opened with a Bridge Party on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, it was the 16th major county road bridge project since Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton took office in 2007.

From information received after a CM request, in a spreadsheet from Administrative Assistant Lisa Greer, the following is a list, by District of New Bridges constructed in the CJE Ann Melton era:

District 1
  • Grassy Creek Bridge, 2007
  • Short Creek Bridge, 2007
  • Damrons Creek, 2007
  • Snake Creek, 2007
  • Sulpher Creek, 2007
  • Purdy-Sano, 2010

District 2
  • Creekbend Bridge, 2007

District 3
  • Cosby Cundiff, 2010
  • Walnut Grove, 2012

District 4
  • Chestnut Grove Bridge, over Leatherwood Creek, 2007
  • Brock Burris Road Bridge, 2007
  • Flatwoods Bridge, 2008
  • Gradyville Country Club, 2009
  • Leatherwood Church Road, 2011

District 6
  • Spout Springs, 2007
  • Steve Breeding, 2010
The largest number of the projects occurred in the first term, when then Gov. Ernie Fletcher helped Adair County catch up with needed bridge projects. Now, Gov. Steve Beshear is continuing Kentucky Highway Department support with an allotment to allow each county in the state to build at least one bridge project each year.

At the Walnut Grove Bridge Party, Magistrate Sammy Baker said he's still wondering why the Kentucky Highway Department Bridge over Glens Fork Creek, on heavily travelled KY 55, is still not rebuilt. "It cost Adair County around $100,000 to build this bridge (Walnut Grove), and we did it in a matter of weeks. The KY 55 bridge is about the same length as this one. Maybe the state ought to let Adair County build the bridge and then buy it back from us."

That is not a new idea. The Holmes Bend Road Bridges at Happy Hollow were deeded to Adair County. Adair County rebuilt the two spans. Then the State Highway Department bought them back, in the Judge Richard Lee Walker Administration, Magistrate Baker said.

Now the dominant families of Valley are the Hingles and the Meyers.

The new Burns Creek Bridge

The bridge was the 16th in an ongoing, accelerated bridge building program in the administration of CJE Ann Melton. The area served, above, is a fast growing residential development, one Adair County School Superintendent, after a school business trip to study county roads and safety, called a Shangri-La. Burns Creek is in the background. Adair County Judge Ann Melton, who has initiated 16 major Adair County road projects in her tenure, had scheduled an appearance at the opening, but was unable to do so because of pressing family needs. All 16 projects were overseen by Mr. Darnell. The Burns Creek Bridge was the second bridge project in Sammy Baker's district during his tenure. Baker is pressing for to see the most needed bridge project in his district completed. It's a Kentucky State Highway Department bridge replacement over Glens Fork Creek on KY 55, in the historic Zion Community.
