It was a perfect evening at Lindsey Wilson College's Roberta C. Cranmer Dining Center, for the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce annual awards banquet, with excellent food, great entertainment with Down Memory Lane, and a moving awards banquet which, for at least one recipient, saw everyone on their feet giving a standing ovation with not a dry eye in the crowd. The Awards Winners were:

  • Dr. Max Downey: Owner of Downey Eye Clinic, Businessman of the Year

  • Brenda Williams: Administrator of Summit Manor, Businesswoman of the Year

  • Kim Goodin: Adair County High School Golf Coach and John Adair Intermediate School Assistant Principal, Educator of the Year

  • Mitchell Burton Dairy Operator, Agriculturalist of the Year

  • Day & Day Feed and Pet: Business/Industry of the Year

  • Lisa Fisher-Clark: Radio Station WAIN, employee of the Year

  • Shirley Grider: Volunteer of the Year
When Sue Stivers, Executive Secretary, read the list of accomplishments for Shirley Grider, she openly wept, As the award was presented, the entire packed house in the dining hall rose to its feet and gave a sustained ovation. Ms. Grider, due to character, said she could not have done the many good deeds she was credited with without the help of others.

It was a totally different event. There was no speaker, and there was All Local Entertainment, with an outstanding Adair County Gospel Group, Friends in Jesus, providing the evening's entertainment, with great old music called "Down Memory Lane." The group includes Junior and Donna Feese, gerald and Cynthia Coomer, Buddy and Nancy Smith, Bobby Lee, and Sammy Blair. They were Grammy Award Winner Great.

The banquet food included: Carved Roast Beef as only Lindsey Wilson can do it, and it was served with their Signature White BBQ sauce. Baked Chicken. Green Beans. Salad. And Desserts.

President Roger Meadows presided and did a masterful job.

The crowd was excellent. The crowning fixture at Chamber Dinners, the dean of the hall, was there: Charles Barnes.

And, on a personal note: there are now two Lar's: Banker Larry Walker said that he's now Lar on the Square. I do still hold the title of Lar on the Air. I'll be with you at 5amCT, on the air, Wednesday morning, in the morning, on WHVE, The Wave, FM 92.7. - Larry Smith

Two very significant civic leaders, Mayor Mark Harris and Mortgage Lender Darrell Overstreet, right were having a great time at the 2012 Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, Tuesday evening, April 17, 2012, at Cranmer Dining Center. The program fit both men's style, with the Down Memory Lane songs and Junior Feese, et al. Mr. Overstreet is a former Coumbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce President and longtime supporter of the organization. Both agreed that this year's event, in its faster-paced format, was one of the best in history.
