Janice Holt Giles was born March 28, 1905. The Giles Society was organized in 1996 to preserve the literary and architectural legacy of Janice Holt Giles and Henry Giles. Janice authored over 25 books and many short stories and articles during her writing career. Her husband also wrote books and articles as well as worked for area newspapers doing some writing for these too. The Giles Society became a non-profit organization and has sought to preserve the log house and property of Henry and Janice. The log house was placed on the National Register of Historic Homes. To enrich the lives of our membership, non-members, the local and regional area, The Giles Society hosts presentations offering educational opportunities to the public. Among these are pottery workshops, flower exchanges, readings of Kentucky writers, musical events, antique car shows, arts and crafts and many other events. The grounds may be rented for a fee of $100 deposit (refundable if grounds and property are not damaged) and a $100 rental fee. Tens of thousands of dollars have been spent to refurbish the two houses on the property in the past 15 years. More is needed. Membership fees help support these endeavors and to preserve a special area of Kentucky and America. Categories for membership are named for Giles book titles. These categories are - Friends $30 - $50 ; 40 Acres and No Mule $51- $100 ; Shady Grove $101 - $250; Around Our House $251- $500; A Little Better Than Plumb $501 - $1000; The Enduring Hills $1001 - $5000; The Believers $5001 or more.
