Poetry by Robert Stone: All hope at stake, a sonnet

All hope at stake
-a sonnet for a seeker
In storage now the zodiac awaits
a dreamer starry-eyed and not earthbound
who scans the heavens not to guide his traits
but in the looking up perceives profound.

Enduring seasons stay the same but shift
beguiling wonder workers with each change
while wiser ones take note that slow not swift
has marked more lastingly extended range.

Courageous hearts still risk the likely break
each new encounter forces comfort face
but chancing nothing puts all hope at stake
and daily fades the path without a trace.

With pride subdued, embracing modesty,
ambitious satisfied seek odyssey.

- Robert Stone, 18 December 2011
